Rules:
1) Cab must be made by you.
2) Cab must be made within the time period of this contest. NO pulling old cabs from your storage baskets!
3) As long as the basic shape is considered a cab it's golden. You can enter intarsias and carved top cabs such as cameos etc. Afterall this is the OUTRAGEOUS cab contest! We love freeform cabs! Pull out the stops y'all and give me the best you have!
4) One entry per person please!
5) Please show photos of your slabs and preforms if you can so we can see your thought process and how you did things.
6) No finished jewelry pieces. Just the cab(s).
7) Cab sets are OK. (think pendant and matching earrings.)
So have some fun! :blob5:

Alright, we are almost halfway through October, can we see some entries???
-
I'll go first, cleaned out the garage looking for the banded opal we collected this summer found it! First time I've worked this material it's very soft but colorful.

Gorgeous cab! A little off on the color balance on the last picture there, but wow that one has some sweet patterns to it! :icon_sunny:
-
Very nice material and nice cut!! Well done! :hello2:
-
Thanks, Replaced finished photo with one in the same light.
-
Just gorgeous. Ha! I particularly like the pruney fingers in the picture with the stone wet. :laughing6:
-
very nice stone; hope you don't mind me comparing it to the bumble bee material but it's very similar looking only it is some sort of calcite and other hot spring mineralization
-
Well worth cleaning out the garage for.
-
TWO more days to go and only one entry???
-
I'm making an executive decision and putting this contest through the end of November. That should give folks some time to get cabs done.
-
Great! I wanted to finish first and last! Does this mean I can enter another cab for November. Lol and maybe finish first first last last

Still only one entry.

Thank you for the warm welcome hehehe!! I am sure I know some of you but, not who is who yet.
The 21 boxes is stock for over the winter to keep me busy hehehe!
Ok, to explain the background of this stone... it is a New Find for a gentleman and he sent me a few slabs to test it out for him... so the preform had a longer tip to it but, it "flaked" and wouldn't allow for a point to it, so I opted to round it. Its stunningly gorgeous material so...
Without further adoooo.... I present my entry "Mescalero Jasper" Original Slab, Design and Finished Product.
I am getting an error message on the size and I did downsize the items, so I will post each separately.
Thank you!!

Thank you :hello:
I have photoshop... edited them down to 600/180dpi which should fit no problem as they were a combination of under 1000KB but, it rejected them. :icon_scratch: :dontknow:

Thank you "accented1".... The material just arrived today, new find for a friend and greatly enjoyed the challenge of testing it out. It was either this or some Amethyst Sage for the entry... or a coin toss on some Mookaite lol!
-
I'm glad you picked this brecciated material because it is :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:

I feel more like "it picked me" today lol! I pulled probably 3 boxes and went through slabs... nothing really jumped out, then the dogs alerted me to the mailman, thought the box was something else I ordered so it was a pleasant surprise lol!
Its a fun and challenging material, I like the natural inclusions (as I call them) in the stone, add character. Well I am off to grind something else tonight, I have a group on FB and my turn at auction is coming up in Dec... need stock! LOL!
Night :sleepy2:
-
SpinerC, that is crazy. Very nice job! I like the way it's all broke up! sweet
-
Thank you Sandsave. Being that it was a test on the material, I tried to pick the most difficult yet, colorful area on the slab to make sure it would stand up to the wheels. I was pleasantly surprised and very pleased.
-
Not many entries thus far putting this out there. Nipomo marcasite that were to be fashioned after crescent moons.. Cheers!

Sweet! Put a Marquise shaped carnelian cab in the center and you have a really funky eye! :icon_sunny:
-
Not many entries yet, but the quality of those 3???? :notworthy: Out of this world!!! :icon_thumright:
I'm still hoping to get some of that Mescalero Jasper, but gotta wait till a thicker slab comes up, as I rather pay a little more than go murdering any rough. :angel9:
-
I have really been loving this Dendritic Chrysocolla recently and that will be my entry...hope you all enjoy :headbang: :headbang:
The first pic is a dry slab of the rough from Arizona. The other pics are of the polished cab from different angles - I have lighting problems.
Approx. 30mm x 35mm
-
Got some unexpected (looking ate rough) nice strong colours in there Jeremy. :icon_thumright: :icon_thumleft:
Looking good.
-
Good to see this contest heating up! :headbang:
-
Oh my, oh my, OH MY!!! I see the first one, and I think "that's it"!! And then the second, " that's it"!! And then the third, then the fourth!!! Oh my head!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Well here we go with my entry in this month's contest. I almost forgot to take a picture of the preform so the picture I did take is not a very good one since it was inside with my iphone. The picture of the finished cab is not that great either because there has not been much sun for the past 3 or 4 days. I will get a better picture when the sun shines again, hopefully tomorrow. This is an ocean jasper with some green druzy.
-
This is really spectacular work going on here this contest :glasses9:
-
I agree with Bent. The workmanship is always top notch in these contests. Good looking entries everyone!
-
And we are rolling along nicely! :hello2:
Love that druzy! :icon_sunny:
-
WOW Some killer cabs in there!! Gorgeous!!
Sorry I have been MIA... back went out a week ago last Monday, so I have literally been flat on my back since then... stolen moments to get to the computer, ice pack first, freeze it till I can't feel it...
:icon_thumright:
-
We have five entries, can we get more before the contest ends tomorrow night?
-
I just finished looking through all of these entries and now I am forced to squeegee off my computer before I can continue further.
Seriously remarkable entries, EVERY ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Well, I don't expect to win, but better late than never. Royal Aztec Agate.
Bought some rocks, and this is what I got. This stuff is HARD! Because it's so small and the color is a thin zone, I had to make them freeform in shape.
Enjoy!
-
Ok, sneaking in by the skin of my teeth ... Please excuse the crappy pictures.
Packsaddle tiger iron preform and finished cab:
-
WOW some beautiful cabs!!! Gluck to all! :headbang:
-
Geez these are awesome! Like moss agate, I never tire of tigers iron either.
Hey Phil, try soaking those agate druzys in some oxalic acid- it is a great non-destructive way to clean organic matter out of crystalline formations like those. Oxalic acid is sold as wood bleach, generally comes in powder form and is pretty cheap. Warm water works better than cold but time soaking works best of all.
-
Ooooooooooo gotta love that tiger iron!!!
-
ok Y'all I'll get the voting up later.
-
Can we have more than one winner? I can't decide... :sad5:
-
I know just how you feel, Gina!!

Thanks. I'll try the hardware store and see if they have any.
-
oxylic acid works best warm
Second hand store, ceramic (NOT METAL) crocpot.
-
Great job Robin I love the terrific job you did and the colors really POP!! :icon_sunny:
Nice work too Phil!.. That is a great cab from the material you had to start with..
So great to see you guys working on making this a great and fun place to be!
Everyone deserves a pat on the back for such interesting materials you chose!!
Well done!
