Title: Have a time sensitive question about storing slabs, mine are rusting away.!!
Post by: Nirena on November 23, 2016, 10:52:56 AM
Really need to know if storing in mineral oil for the time being until the rusting in my house has stopped. Posted about it ruined almost everything metal with rust, is also rusting slabs. Made a tiny mistake turning my pickle on forgot I had sprayed 3 rings with HCL for a patina recipe. Vapor acid + dangerous acid that vaporizes quickly is very bad. It even rusted the insides of my picture frames, tools, equipment, etc. But don't want to ruin slabs
They were left in the air in another room, we thought that was ok. Nope!. So I'm neutralizing the acid painting a few coats of mineral oil and hopes that stops the rusting. They're not going to go to mush in oil are they. I'm trying this because it's the only thing that stopped my wrecked tools from instantly rusting right after I got the rust off. If this isn't a good way what is. Oh they're in ziploc in a box atm.

I would put layers of baking soda then slabs then more baking soda in a bucket and leave the slabs in there for awhile to neutralize the acid.  That is the only thing I can think of at the moment.  Leave them outside in the bucket in a dry place and let the baking soda do it's stuff.

Maybe someone else will have another idea.

Do you have a Sam's Club or Costco?  They sell really big bags of baking soda.

Oh that's a great idea.  They have soaked in water and baking soda but still are rusting I'll try that thanks!

Umm hmmm. Possibly an expected result. I think oil is the way to go. Remove the oxygen from the equation. Make sure you still have enough.
