5 degrees, five inches of snow at minimum, with drifts up to four feet on the road between me and town. We have a local snow plow and sanding truck, thank goodness, (the county would never come out this far) but even the UPS guy (who really will come out in any weather) was having trouble in his big box truck and said he'd landed in a deep drift trying to deliver somewhere yesterday. We're about to a month of snow on the ground, which is unheard-of in "our time" (the last 20 years) but not that unusual in the long-term records. Just very cold. No rocks for me, I can't see them, I can't find them, I can't cut them, can't polish them until all this clears up!
I found someone's autobiographical account of hauling freight through the valley 160+ years ago, about how everyone in the party lost something to frostbite when they camped along the creek. I can believe it now! Wind chills are down to -16.

Over the hill here in McKenzie Bridge, we have 2 feet of snow in the yard. I have been plowing the old folks out with my tractor for a few days now. I think I wore out my suicide knob and my pecs are screaming. My shop was 15 degrees this morning so no cutting for me either.
The house is warm, the fire is cheerful and the ache in my muscles will subside with time.
Happy new years all..... Lots of snow melt for the streams this year.

Hopefully this cold will slow down the mountain pine bark bettle devastation out west . A similar plague has been working north on the east coast due to the rediculously warm winters of the last 20 years. good book time and good time to bundle up and watch the stars at night.
-
Breaking a 30 year record in Boise, Idaho. We usually get snow, snow melts and we get more for a short period. Over 2 feet in my yard now and it has been here for a month. Now I remember why I do not live in South Dakota anymore. No snow plows out here.

Kind of wet here in California too. We're expecting 4 inches of rain this weekend. Yosemite NP is expecting major flooding. The big flood of 1997 reached 23 feet of water at the Pohono Bridge (West end of the Valley). Sunday they are expecting it to peak at 21 feet. The Park issued a warning to visitors; if you plan on coming this weekend make other plans.

-10 on the thermometer last night, and we have about a foot of unmelted snow on the ground. More forecast for next week, but temps should rise. Thank goodness I put in a stock of seed for the birds and squirrels. I'm really ready for my visit to Quartzsite in a couple of weeks. 70 there today!
-
Oh my! Stay warm and safe all. It's 73° here in Florida right now and we're supposed to get down to 38° on Saturday night. :LOLOL:

Got 8 more inches yesterday and it's stacked up to annoyingly above-snowboot-level. Still snowing!
Had a pipe break in a hotel/conference building last night, not from freezing, but from strain from being improperly installed 10+ years ago, so all my neighborhood and I got to go run around and make more ice as we bailed and shop-vaced and cut carpet. Have to wait for it to thaw before we'll know if there's damage to the siding, which is likely- pipe broke in an attic and water flowed between the attic and second floor outer walls, then down to the first floor and out to its walls. The building's got 2 foot icicles on its roof now and one back wall covered in ice! We theoretically thaw tomorrow, but it's a north-slope building and unlikely to get enough full sun for the few hours of 36 degree weather we've been promised.
A neighbor from Florida does not believe us when we tell her this never happens here! All the neighborhood kids have their pick of slopes for sledding and big field lights are turned on in the evenings for night sledding and tubing, and one family makes a bonfire on the hill. We're all making the best of it, but still- everyone's ready for some 'normal' winter weather again.
-
I have to admit that I do not miss the Chicago winter weather. Below zero with wind chills just stink! I'm such a sissy now that I moan when we get below freezing. We had around 4" of snow on Christmas Eve, which is pretty unusual where we are. It's usually just a dusting or an inch or two. Was happy when the sun melted the snow on the roads before we had to trek over to Vince's mom's house for Christmas. Most people have no clue how to drive in snow around here.
-
We also got another 8" yesterday. Total well over 2' now. Turned to freezing rain this morning and we are holding our breath. We have a 11,000 sq. ft. riding arena on the property that has been converted to a ag. building and it is sagging badly this morning. If the temp continues to rise and we start to melt we may dodge a bullet. I put posts under the 60' trusses a couple years back but the trusses are kicking out laterally and who knows? :dontknow:
Here is a picture of our 20'x36' green house! :LOLOL:
I am ready for some "normal" winter weather also. A nice 40 degree rain would be quite welcome. Hmmm, never thought I would say that!

My 20 x 50 foot greenhouse was destroyed by two feet of snow followed by 90 mph winds 4 years ago. About half of my trees and shrubs were killed or badly broken that evening. All our hard work can be very inconsequential at times which is a good reminder that we are just borrowing this place.

Snowing Saturday morning and cold, by noon it was raining and it hadn't stopped. This morning the snow is gone and it is 50 degree. My side driveway and back lot is flooding. The ground is saturated and no more water will soak in. They are talking about rain up to 10,000' elevation and to expect the rivers to flood. I would rather have the snow.

It's the Pineapple Express wet warm air coming from Hawaii and I think we are dead center.
Good luck to everyone and stay warm.

Everyone in the path of this nasty weather please stay safe and warm!

I remember working downtown Reno during the big flood of 97. My father ran a hotel there, and we had windows in the restaurant overlooking the river. At the peak of the flood, you could sit in the restaurant and the water was about waist high on the windows. Crazy times. They say the flood might peak above that this time. Stay safe Jhon!
-
97 was. Bad we were land locked for over a week. They wouldn't let us go over the bridges intill they made repairs to where the roads were washed out by them. Not as bad this time but still. Flooding, don't know if I am going to work today
-
Denver area has the downslope Chinook winds melting our snow today but the mountains are getting hammered. Several feet throughout the mountains. I-70 closed due to snow and Ice and if they get it open, probably have to close for short periods for avalanche control. Walden CO got to -34 Saturday night for he coldest place in the nation.
No snow forecast for the Denver Area but the mountains are supposed to continue to get lots more snow.
Stay warm and try to stay dry where ever you are

The levy on the river broke yerterday and hy 395 is closed between gardnerville and carson city because of flooding. A 20 min drive is taking up To two hours to drive around. A lot of flooding in Reno. Now we have heavy snow in the Mountians and most of the passes are closed. At least the snow and cold will stop the flooding

Having lived in North Dakota and Montana for over 55+ years,I got to hate snow, ice and cold temps!!!! Finally moved to western Oregon to get away from the ugly white monster!
It's been great, never below 25 degrees in the winter months and NO SNOW! LOL
Well this year floored us, with over a half foot of snow and teen temps! It last only a month or so,our rains are back and hopefully the white stuff is gone!
-
Snow supposed to come in this evening. 3" to 5" expected by Wednesday evening. Wind expected with the snow. More drifts to shovel out of the driveway. :Bash:
-
Yep, snowing here again, 2 inches on the ground and more coming. Worst in over 30 years but nothing like when I lived in Michigan and the Dakotas. Moving back to Oregon for liquid sunshine, had enough.
This means a huge rock sale this spring, if the damn snow ever melts.
-
It melted and then it showed up again! But melted by this afternoon. Still have packed ice in lots of shady corners.
-
It sounds like you live in Michigans U.P. good luck with all that. Time to break out the dogsleds!

It was 60 and sunny yesterday.

This winter is the coldest and snowiest in 30 years according to old timers in Pullman. An unusual number of moose have been in the Palouse this winter apparently driven out of Idaho by the snow. A lot of spring fever out there.
-
Sounds like lots of us are ready for spring, In last few days we have had about 6 inches of snow, and cold, extreme cold warning today, it was -46 with wind chill
But at least forcast is for melting in couple days,
-
Finally sunny skies and 50's here.............

It has been snowing; it is snowing, it will be snowing. Getting tired of conjugating Snow!. The mailbox and furnace vent are slowly disappearing- both bad signs, especially the furnace vent. I hate the thought of having to battle through huge drifts of snow and enormous bushes just to get to the thing to shovel it out, with the snow well over the tops of my boots and no ski pants. Ugh. We had 4.5 " Tuesday, 8.5" Thursday, 10" yesterday through today and going, plus, if it ever stops, another storm predicted Wednesday through Thursday, and nothing has melted because it's been so cold. It did briefly warm up and dump freezing rain in there, b ut that is just extra cement holding it all in place. The white stuff is real pretty and so are the waves from the howling winds, but c'mon now. Enough is enough! View from my neighbor's house. The waves are actually huge and roaring, though you can't tell in the picture.
-
You are really getting hammered out that way this year. :sad5:
-
It is bleeping still snowing. It was supposed to stop! People are starting to have to carve out their house windows-on the second floor. The roads seem barely plowed. The plow drivers have been given off time to go sleep because they haven't had any sleep at all in 3 days and the roads not only have huge furrows, but the main streets have 6 foot tall new medians made of snow where there were no medians before and are down to one lane. They can't find any more places to put the snow. This stuff is never going to melt. :undecided:
-
Where are you? It actually looks wonderful!
-
Was in Maine yesterday, now in MA, several feet of snow on the ground, but there are finally blue skies and no snow falling! Yay!
-
The last of the snow we have been dealing with since Thanksgiving is almost gone here in McKenzie Bridge. :toothy10:
We have had a couple of mild winters before this one and I think that not only did I get older but I may have lost some of the toughness that is so helpful when dealing with extremes.
I finally managed to get up on the roof and clean the flu pipe. Way overdue...
The sun is out and I should be fixing the 2 miles of gravel roads which I maintain for our neighborhood. But... our grand daughter is here and I am playing grampa.
We got a bunch of seeds planted in the potting shed and the heat mats have them sprouting.
Spring will come, but it can not come too soon as far am concerned.
Best,
Bill

We have spring flowers in bloom already, down by our mailbox......That's a good sign!
-
5 inches this morning and snowing hard.......really?
Sigh...
