Title: a couple from yesterday
Post by: wheatguy on January 17, 2017, 10:26:04 AM
I was relatively motivated to cut and polish a few cabs yesterday...one from Indian moss agate, and the others from self collected agate and petrified wood.  Now I need to get motivated to learn how to take a bit better of a photo!

A neutral or white background  would be a good place to start. Keep them coming!

That bottom cab is some killer wood. Hope to see more of that.

I just bought a pack of various colors of craft paper. Lots of colors to experiment with. If the stone doesn't look right on one color I delete it & try another color until I find something I like. The paper is matt finish, so no bounced light or reflections.

Thanks for the tips on backgrounds!  I've tried white for some pictures, but found things were pretty washed out.  I imagine it depends on the stone and there is no 'one size fits all'.

I'm really lucky with my job in that a lot of it is field work, planting and harvesting wheat research plots.  It gives me lots of time to collect rocks in the summer and fall.  The petrified wood is from Lamar, Colorado.  They have some killer stuff down that way and I have only scratched the surface on it...

As you get closer to Parker you will find large deposits of that wood.

I think one of the local DJ's who lives in Parker was excavating for a pool or a garage or something a couple of months back and uncovered an entire petrified tree.

Great pics and information. Never knew a way to preserve them, either.
