Title: Cutting a roadside rock
Post by: Kaljaia on February 17, 2017, 01:15:14 PM
Picked up some big prospective chunks from an old wash beside the road. Had time last night for just one cut- this stuff is hard! Saw did not want to go through it and the red/tan plumes 'bleed' all over the oil. It's basically the same as the 'hummingbird agate' material I used to post, but sourced a mile or so away from that streak. I'll knock ends off the rock and see what the other sides look like, but it may just be a garden rock. Not terribly enthusiastic about turning my oil bright red and the tan/red plume isn't very exciting, but the rest of it might be.

Maybe a high iron content? I would polish a test piece and see if it is worth cutting. The red won't hurt the oil it should settle out. I was cutting some tiger iron and it did the same thing.
You must have a break in the weather before the next storm hits!
I am so tired of the snow and the mud!

48 hours of a break, yes! And now it's raining rather steadily and should be for quite some time. It's not a bad thing! Winter is the desert's spring, so there's already green coming up everywhere.

I want to incorporate the darker agate here into my mythical tabletop design, because there the pits or cracks won't matter nearly so much.

I see some potential on there.  Always fun sawing those unknowns; sometimes you hit that jackpot.

The Oso berries are looking like they will bloom soon, the first native blooms here. Have fun. I think that has possibilities but we can't see the cracks.

It's one of my rocks, of course it has cracks! :P
Actually not too bad, just a few and this is an end cut so I'm hoping for more solid stuff in the middle. Figure if the six weeks of subzero weather didn't make it go to pieces, it's probably somewhat solid.
