Found a very nice chunk of solid red/orange moss. Takes forever to cut (abt 30-40 minutes per cut) but it's pretty and remarkably not fractured or pitted, beyond the usual slight difference in moss texture and some tiny vugs. Haven't decided what to do with it yet- only had time to cut two slabs- but there's a lot of rock still on the saw!

(I scoot the heavy sludge and bits off to the corner, then trowel them out once the oil's drained. Helps keep the oil clear.)

That's mighty pretty stuff. Should make some great cabs.

Was the agate found locally or otherwise ? :icon_scratch:

Thanks for the comments and encouragement! The rest of the block is still on the saw, will cut some more tomorrow if I have time. Otherwise, it'll be one cut a night until it's all slabbed up. I may keep the slabs large- solid material like this is so uncommon for me, I am thinking of designing a larger project than just cabs for it- something to work towards, at least.

If I post it, assume it's John Day basin unless stated otherwise. I should put that in my signature. Collected on private property with permission, between Antelope and Ashwood. This chunk in particular was found on a hillside above an old homestead road and stone fireplace. I scoured the hillside for the vein and found a small piece of petrified wood nearby, but couldn't come up with a source.

Another of the day's cuts, a very fractured but very dramatic dark translucent agate with red moss. Got a few small slabs from this piece. They're deeply fractured, so will probably save for the tabletop project. This location is on a lose dirt hillside and I am trying to find the vein, but so far have found only scorpions.
