Title: Bead forum issue (lithic post no reply or new topic)
Post by: irockhound on July 17, 2017, 12:22:51 PM
Hiya.  I just looked at Lithic's new post in the bead area and noticed it was missing the picture.  But when I looked to reply there is no ability to do a new topic or reply to an existing topic in that forum.  Obviously these other forums work fine for me.  PS not mobile and using my regular pc here.

okay...
I just went and looked and it was fine for me, and I am on a PC too.

So this is what I need from you:

1) Screenshot showing the exact problem.
2) Browser version and what operating system you are using (Windows, Linux, IOS..).
3) I need you to close your browser window, and reboot your computer as it could be as simple as a bad cookie in the mix and a reboot takes care of that.

If the reboot does not fix the problem then I will definitely need the other above information so I can hunt down what is happening here.
Also is anyone else having this problem?

I looked at that post earlier and just now. I also do not see a picture, just some guy talking about another beautiful bead.... And I want to see it because it probably is pretty damn nice.  Anyway, I am going to put a reply on it and maybe attach a picture and see what happens.

Just for the record, I can see the picture just fine.  I'm running Windows 10 and Firefox.  I just downloaded the picture and  posted it here.  Can you see it on this thread?

I see it fine here.  And I had no problem posting that response in a different part of the forum is was only the bead area.  I made several other posts in other areas at the same time I had the problem with bead.  And yes I see your image here.

Windows 10 64 bit, Chrome 64 bit v 59.0.3071.115.

I'll look at the same forum again and see if the problem is still there since I haven't made any changes yet and machine hasn't been rebooted. Then I will clear cookies and reboot.

Okay still shows problem.  clearing and rebooting.  Below is what I see on the thread.

Okay I have cleared cookies and temp files, cache, history, and rebooted.  I have come back into the forum and entered every area/board on the forum and the only board I can't reply or add topic is beads, every other area works fine.

I'm having the same problem with Win 7 using IE.

I can see the image Hummingbirdstones posted just fine -- very nice pendant.

I'm also having another weird problem, don't know if it's the Forum or my computer.  When I click on a topic I frequently get a blank screen until I hit refresh.  Annoying as hell.  Doesn't happen elsewhere.

Gemfeller - try clearing your cache or hit Ctlr+F5 and see if that works.

ok...
Gergis cannot post using Tapatalk to this bead section of the forum, hasn't been able to for a while but he is the only Tapatalk user with the problem..
Now I have folks unable to see pictures in the same section on their PC...
Yet every admin has no issue seeing those posts and pictures...

OK, I am going to go poke around and see what the heck is going on in the forum controls/permissions.  Nothing has been changed, and shouldn't have changed recently either...

Ok found something weird...
Fixed the setting.

Try it now and report back.

Have no clue how it happened but half the forum members were denied the ability to post attachments on that part of the forum?????!?!?!?!

OK, one question..

Is it only happening in "Show your Finished beads?"

Or is this happening in multiple areas?

To attempt to track down the problem I made a new subforum under the bead section.  Check it out and let me know if you have the same problems in the new section or not and any other anomalies you run across.  Please try posting images to it, try viewing those images and try responding to the topic.  I'm desperately trying to figure out why this category of the forum is giving folks so many problems, and giving me a case of insomnia and apoplexy...

Settings could have been changed during the server move.  Gremlins live in the space between servers and love mucking things up.

You're welcome...
One last question.
So the actual "Show your Finished Beads" is working for you now?
Or is it only the new section I built for testing that is working?
Just trying to verify before I nuke that new section.

No images or buttons in the "Show Your Finished Beads" board. Haven't had any problems anywhere else.

Windows 8.1 and IE 11.

**sighs**
I don't know what to do now.
I've adjusted permissions to the point most of you in that section should be able to do things only mods could do.  Yet you still cannot see images in the old area or post to them.  I don't get it.   :dontknow: :sad5:

I'm completely out of ideas here.
I've tried to tweak every setting there is that could even be remotely responsible for the problem.  I've spent over two hours trying to solve this between last night and this morning and I'm at a loss...

I can wait and see if this weekend Randy can figure it out.  With his work hours I don't expect him to be able to log in till at least Saturday.

Can I say HOW AMAZINGLY WELL the rest of the forums are operating!  As an ex I.T. guy you never heard when things are going well , just when they were broken.  One day a guy came in my office and told me that when his buddy was complaining about their computer systems being down all the time he realized how good we did at our office and wanted to thank me.

Kudos to you all :Worthy: :Worthy: :Worthy: :Worthy: :Worthy:

Thanks Steve.  I appreciate that.  I keep banging my head against my desk trying desperately to figure out this problem while also trying to clean my studio AND get things prepped around this house so that when I start my full time job next week my Husband doesn't go into full scale shock.  I just got done hand rolling three and a half trays of homemade gnocchi that are going into the freezer so when I get home from work I can grab some and toss it in boiling water, add in some veggies and some chicken and voila, we have dinner.  I also have crock pot meals to prep and lunches to prep, a seminar to attend tonight, dog training tomorrow night, and someplace in there I have to attempt to get some sleep because sleep hasn't been coming easy to me as of late...

OK so I have a crazy arsed idea...

I take the test board and rename it.
Move everything from the old category into the new one.

Nuke the old one.

In theory, that should fix the problem right?

I just did the move and Nuke.
Let me know if things still work in the new board or not...

Heh. You musta' been hangin' around some geeks somewhere, girl. Worked perfectly!

I thought you'd nuked it for real when I hit the home page, but recreating it just moved it to the bottom of the beads section instead of at the top where I'd been accustomed to seeing it.

Am a former network admin, too, so I think what you did was a "pro" fix. It would be nice to know "why" - but it's nicer to know "it works". That comes from having end users and clueless bosses asking "when will it be fixed?".

Vince,
Oddly enough there was a reason for what I did.
Any time a category forum has been created - we've done it before for that forum section to narrow this problem down - if we left it up top, the problem persisted.  Something with having it at the top for some bizarre reason was causing a problem.  On a hunch I took the test forum, which was working at the bottom - and I renamed it and moved all the threads to it so as to not lose them.

The weird thing was when I got done moving threads to the new category, the old category still showed that I had FOUR PAGES of threads when I had none.  That tells me something with the code in that section was screwy.  What that something was - haven't a clue.  But gut instinct said nuking it was the best way to go to hopefully permanently solve the problem.

So cross fingers...

I don't know code worth jack squat.  I just decided to act on instinct based on patterns I saw in the behavior of the forums and threads.
As for hanging around Geeks - My Husband is a Computer Software Engineer.  I think it's rubbing off on me.

You're welcome!
I'm glad I was able to finally get that fixed after twelve hours over several weeks of banging my head.  However it seems your tapatalk problem and the new problems some PC users were having was related.  In fixing the one, I fixed the other.
