Title: Looking for rocks...
Post by: Enchantra on October 31, 2014, 05:24:11 PM
Well more specifically I'm looking for Unusual Garden rocks.  You know the leaverites you cannot cut up but are pretty to look at in your gardens.
Any good places to search these out?

I ask because I'm going to be putting in an herb garden in my entry area to my house on both sides of the sidewalk.  I'd like to accent the gardens with rocks of all types.  So far I have a large piece of rock crystal druzy that is to big to be druzy, and some crystal conglomerate that I think is calcite.  However I'm open to plain jane rocks, or rather anything that's nice looking.  If you can't slab it or cut it open and use it, then it's good garden material right?

So any good places to find such rocks around here?
Thanks.

Most people around here just go out and find them themselves.  We've found great yard rocks at estate sales, too.  Lots of folks have interesting yard rocks.  We've gotten most of ours from estate sales and even garage sales.  The lady next door to us has a huge piece of petrified wood that probably weighs at least 300 pounds that she was trying to sell at her garage sale last weekend.  Unfortunately, she had a $400 price tag on it.  Said she'd probably take $300, though.  It's still in her yard.   :laughing6:  Sometimes all you have to do is ask the people if the rocks are for sale, too.  They usually are.

Well...
If I could get the Hubby to actually stop at Garage or estate sales that would be great.
If I'm going to go to them I'll probably be going alone.  He's not much of a people person.  I was highly impressed with how well he handled all the guests at our Housewarming party.
I'll just have to keep my eyes open.

Take Gina with you. Some of the sand and gravel places have large blocks of granite for sale. Then there are the guys that sell large boulders on the weekends near new subdivisions for landscaping. Me, I just went to Cave Creek wash right off of Carefree Highway and with a hand truck gathered up a couple of tons of rocks for a friend in Tatum Ranch to make his raised cactus garden, turned out pretty nice too. I was in better condition ten years ago with my back than now but it's something you and Gina could do, just don't take your vehicle down into the washes as you could really get stuck unless you four wheel drive, be safe out in the boondocks.

Yeah, you could pick up some common types like that and then get some other specimens to mix in at the Flagg show.
