Title: 'new beginnings' - tendril form Wyoming nephrite jade
Post by: southerly on August 06, 2017, 09:08:46 PM
Inspired by a bone carving on Kurt's Lapidary Challenge FB page so I decided to have a go. This piece is titled 'new beginnings' symbolising the mental health issues in my family. The jade comes from Wyoming, it is a nice colour, micro pitting thwarted my attempt to get a mirror polish as the pits showed up as pin pricks and looked ugly. After many hour sanding and polishing I called it quits and went back to 400 grit for the body of the pod. The tendril is polished to 50k diamond.

I find the proportions quite pleasing and the color of the jade is not insistent it is calming , a nice combination. It will be interesting to see if you develop this theme. Thanks.

My eye finds the elegant, naturalistic forms and your exploitation of the color zoning quite intriguing. My other eye just really likes it
