Title: Outrageous Cab Contest September 2017
Post by: hummingbirdstones on September 01, 2017, 05:21:39 PM
Rules:
1) Cab must be made by you.
2) Cab must be made within the time period of this contest.  Contest begins on the first of the month and ends on 11:59 p.m. on the last day of the month.  NO pulling old cabs from your storage baskets!
3) As long as the basic shape is considered a cab it's golden.  You can enter intarsias and carved top cabs such as cameos etc.  After all, this is the OUTRAGEOUS cab contest!  We love free form cabs!  Pull out the stops and give us the best you have!
4) One entry per person please!
5) Please show photos of your slabs and preforms if you can so we can see your thought process and how you did things.
6) No finished jewelry pieces.  Just the cab.
7) Cab sets are OK.
8) This is only for bragging rights and your cabochon photo posted up top in the forums unless someone posts a lapidary related prize and wants to ship it to the winner of the contest.

Let the games begin!!!   :toothy10:

Hi folks,
I have not been cutting this summer. My wife and I started a new business and we have been working a lot.
The fires here along the McKenzie River ended that season for us. We are under a level one evacuation order and after getting the camper moved and some things in order I went out to the shop, put on my respirator (helps with the smoke and the arsenic) and cut some Trent.
Here is a start for the new contest....
Two sided, 7mm thick, 58mm long (21/4") and 20mm wide. Double taper on the bezel and very low domes to keep the character of the stone intact.

I am new to rock cutting this is my first summer doing it,
I found some rocks to cut up at an aquarium store for people to put in their tank, picked up some petrified wood (Rainbow?)
I cut it up on our Harbor Freight tile saw and did the shaping on our old Sears lapidary outfit.
I made a template out of an old cutting board sheet below are the results.

Nice inclusions in that Agate. Particularly like how you shaped the cab in order to include as many features as possible.

The Jasper too, nice work there, and looking good.

OK, here we go.
For the first time in this hobby, I'm trying out something manmade......
Bumble Hole Slag from England
Got the rough piece from a young friend who found it there while searching for flint.

While cutting off a piece, got a break-away and turned it into a heart

Will try to get a picture with another background (found the perfect background, but not clear focus) for the voting-stage and add it here once done.
Remain with best regards, Kurt

Here we go! Jasper from the Jacpot, Nv area. I collected this my last trip to Jackpot a month or so ago. This on has some small crystal vugs and is totally healed, great mix of color.
It's kinda interesting a lot of people beeline it to the Texas Springs area to dig for limbcast, and don't realize they are driving past some really nice pet wood and jasper. Don't get me wrong the pink limbcast is nice but only reveals one color, I'll take the other material in the area any day.

Great entries, my contribution, Polish flint stone, a good friend went home to Poland last year and asked me to slab a block he brought back.
