Title: Adjustable Bead Cord Tutorial
Post by: LithicStrings on November 13, 2014, 06:54:48 PM
This tutorial will take a number of posts to show the complete process of knotting your cord to make an adjustable necklace for stringing a beads or pendants.
To tie a cord that is adjustable, start with a cord that is about 5 inches longer than your desired length for the finished necklace.  If you want a 25 inch finished necklace, start with a 30 inch piece of cord.  The final necklace can be adjusted to be 3-4 inches shorter by pulling the knots apart.
This tutorial will start to show the knotting.

We buy our cord  for this application from " B Toucan ". We could not get their  .8 mm cord through a perfect 1.25 mm hole  so we assume that the stated diameters are measured under strain . LtihicBeads’ pendant pictures use the .8 mm for 2.5 mm drilled holes and 1.8 mm cord for 4 mm holes.  Either cord may be doubled through those holes as in a faced drilled application.

The first picture shows that you start with your cord with the free ends overlapping.
We'll start knotting the left free end.
Picture three shows how the free end is wrapped around the other side of the cord, wrapping to the left (away from the center).  Wrap at least 2 times, loosely.
The next post will show the next steps for side one.
Additional posts will show how to do the second side and how to adjust the length of the finished cord.

After completing 2-3 loops, put the free end through the loops.  The second picture shows the free end after it has passed through the loops that it made.
Grab the free end to pull it through and tighten the first knot.  Don't make it too tight as you want to be able to adjust it, but do make it snug.

The bottom picture shows the finished first knot.

The next post will continue with the second knot.

Now move on to make a knot on the right side.
Again loop the free end 2-3 times around the cord, looping toward the middles. Keep the loops loose so you can pass this free end back through them.

The rest of the pictures show the finishing of the second knot by passing the free end through the loops, grabbing it, and pulling it snug.

Next post will show the finished cord and adjustment technique.

Here is the finished knotting.   To make it its full length, pull the strands to snug the knots against each other.  Don't pull too tight or it will be stuck at this length.

The next pictures show how to shorten your necklace.  Pry the knots apart, then slip them away from each other to shorten the whole necklace.

That's it.
