Title: Playing with the rolling mill again!
Post by: Donnies58 on November 15, 2014, 10:54:39 AM
This one wasn't done in the rolling mill but I was trying to anneal it to get it softer for the rolling mill because the first one I did was not soft enough.  Thought if I did it longer it would help.  Well beings how it is silver filled & not sterling it got kind of funky on me & the silver sort of melted in the center.  It sort of had a cool pattern & I didn't want to throw it in my recycle jar so I played with it some to see if I could salvage it.

The rest of these are from the rolling mill, all copper.

I like the funky texture on the silver filled piece!  Isn't it amazing what happens sometimes when we are trying to make something and we make a mistake - and presto magico our mistake is something pretty awesome!   :headbang:

I bet if you made a pair of earrings to match that silver pendent they would sell!  That pattern is cool!   :notworthy:

Thanks, Amanda.  That is an awesome idea, however I don't think I could repeat the same mistake two more times.  I guess you could call that a happy mistake.

I think I see a theme here, the sea! Nice looking work for sure. Where did you get you patterns?

Beautifull work Donny, I've just started doing some folded copper hammering after being inspired by some autum leaves I saw recently in someones post. I really like the colour and patina of copper; just have to figure a couple of things out so I can use it to mount stones.

Itsandbits, I will be watching for some of those copper leaves & to see how you do with mounting the stones.  This is where I got the patterns for the sea life & dragonfly. https://www.etsy.com/shop/rollingmillresource?page=2

I'll have to get past the "throw it in the trash" stage before I'll post anything LOL

Looks to me like you make reticulated silver.  This works extremely well with 80% silver/20% copper mix.  You anneal and pickle a few times then do the reticulation (basically melt the inside) to get the crazy patterns.

Heck Greg, that was just my attempt at annealing.  I just over did it.

The pendant that melted in the center is a form of "reticulation" which can be done on Sterling by pickling the surface a few times to bring fine silver to the surface. Then when heated almost to the melting stage the surface will wrinkle, due to sterling inside melting before the fine silver surface.
       Hope this helps,      olgguy
