Title: 3 finished. Sand gardens. 20+- pics
Post by: wampidy on November 26, 2014, 08:48:46 AM
Even though there is a modify button at the top of the first post I could not modify it so I had to start a new one. I was damn lucky that I copied it before I hit the post button. A pain in the butt and a bunch of extra time to add to a post. I think I will go back to posting on the other forum. No worries.

I do not have the first one finished but I have been working a lot of stones for the next batch. Some of these stones may get used for the custom knife holders but I have not decided which ones yet. All of these stones are jade except for one which I will start with. I have looked over the stones that the Japanese use and ALL of them are ugly black rough rock. I realize the raking of the sand is a meditative thing and the purpose of the garden but I have decided that a rock that is pleasing to the eye is a happy thing that will help the meditation part of the garden more than an ugly rock. I would rather have no rock over an ugly one. PLUS I am not one to do thing the traditional way or the "way it is supposed to be". Art is creating, not copying.

This stone is one of the very few stones that I have not cut. If I decide to use it for a sand garden it will be the most like what the Japanese use in their gardens The difference being the snow caps on the mountains. I believe this is black agate (I have found others) with the patina, or whatever it is called, from weathering in the sun for a thousand years just like all the other surface agates I have found.

The jade is from Washington, California and Wyoming.

My favorite of them all. Black jade from California that is almost perfectly flat and level on the top. The spots in it are metal or mica ????

This is California jade also but it has some beautiful silver streaks in the pointy end and a clear inclusion of something.

This is the end off of a long tooth of Washington translucent jade that I cut up for Mel on RTH. I want to get a small dragon to put on top with a slot for a custom knife or maybe here. Won't know until it happens.

Another Washington jade from Frank. I was going to stand it up but the long flat side would not polish very good.

California jade from Pat on RTH.

I think this is from Frank but not sure.

This is a small piece of translucent jade with inclusions that I bought in Quartzsite. The seller told me that it came out of a rusted bucket that had Wyoming jade written on the outside but when I put a strong light to it it looks just like the Washington translucent jade that I got several years ago from Mel. It is polished on five sides but I do not know if I am going to save it for two rings or use it here. Another "when it happens" rock.

I managed to get two more bases cut out before the snow covered everything but I will have to cut all the side pieces inside.

Thanks for looking and any comments or opinions are welcome.

I believe my wife has been hitting the reply button to add to her posts. I am going to send you some things i can copy about the theory of Japanese stone placement. I will include it with the stone of yours i have been working on which I will post this weekend. This old man is cutting slow nowadays.

Yes that is how most folks add things to their post.
I will go take a peek at the code and see if something isn't working right.  Jim, don't go away!  We love you!

EDIT:  I just went in and modified some things.  Let me know how that is working and I'll tweak it more if I have to.  Basically I turned off the code that was limiting editing time on the posts.  I also tweaked some things with the picture attachments as well to hopefully make life a tad easier for folks.  You can still only upload four photos per post when using the forum attachment system.  If you have to have more than four attachments in a topic, just hit reply to your original post and add more in.

Put me on the waiting list for that one.

Okay, I have you down for the tooth for $1000.00. I did not plan to sell that one but since you are good to the earth I will make an exception. The black flat topped one is my new favorite anyway, And I won't charge you that much. lol Might be just a tad high.

I just had a thought about shipping and realize I should get a couple of the flat boxes so I do not get too big for a flat rate.

I am making the bases just about totally uneven now but keeping the corners at a 45 degree angle. I do not have a cut off saw and had to cut a 22.5 degree slot in my miter saw so I could make 45 degree corners. When I was a kid we had an adjustable miter saw (back when dirt was rocks) but buying one like that today would be either really expensive or impossible. I have tried to find a 4" miter saw with no luck but during the winter it would be tough to use because the cold sucks and I don't think I could deal with the dust in this little space.

Gotta get a box of thin slabs ready to send so off I go.

One more thing. The Chinese make their wood super dark (all of everything) and the Japanese gardens that I have looked at are all large gardens that are on the ground so not much wood. I bought clear varnish to put on the wood but i am wondering if ya'll think it should be stained darker? Some of the wood is really light colored and has almost no visible grain.

Personally, I like to use oil on the wood to let the character stick out. I've got some figured maple, fir, cedar and cherry in my wood shed if you want any for your projects. I can plane them to thickness & cut to width too.

Hmmmmm, looks like we might have to work out a trade of some kind or other. I disassembled a baby gate that stops little kids from falling down the stairs then bought some small strips to glue on so the plywood has something to sit on. This wood is not going to go too far so I might be looking for some a little later on.

Question:  is CA jade the same as black agate?

The color and pattern in these is very pretty- I would like to see the sand garden.

Gina, agate and CA jade are about as different as spaghetti and apples except for sometimes the polished look will be similar if the jade is tight grained and polished up real nice. The flat topped piece is one that looks similar. 8500 grit is my new 3000 because I used to stop at 3000 (the highest I had) but now that I have the 8500 I get a much better polish on everything (almost) There are some jades that get worse when I go over 3000.

The silver streaks in the pointy black jade piece is gorgeous and I think it will fit really well in a sand garden.

I have one base made and am working on two more that are bigger. Haven't been able to get outside to work so I now have a lot of sanding dust in my home. I have been able to contain it pretty well by putting a strip of sticky back sandpaper on the table and rubbing the wood on top of it. I could have gone outside and used my belt sander (50 whopping degrees today) but tomorrow is our thanks giving and I had a lot to do today.

I will be adding photos as I go along.

The one eighth inch plywood is warped so I had to add stiffeners to the bottom to try to get them flat. Isn't perfect but they are close to flat and I can add felt sticky buttons to them to keep them from rocking. Not to the end of the learning curve yet but I think one quarter inch plywood will be better and save a lot of work.

Not sure how I missed this comment.

Hah, I have so many qualities you could not possibly find them all. If you only need four more I can pull that many out from under my cap. Uh, let me think, maybe those aren't qualities. My bad, they are quantities. And those things under my cap are hairs. I have four hairs under my cap. I'll get this figured out yet.

I have made a lot of progress so I thought I would update on what is happening. I am trying to get several of these completed to the point of needing a finish put on them so I can do them all at once.

I have to keep changing things up to keep the interest up because I am not good at doing the same thing over and over. Went with curves on this one then stressed on how I was going to make the edges. I made two identical pieces then flipped one and glued them together.
(http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/h375/wampidy/Sand%20gardens/P3280004.jpg) (http://s1106.photobucket.com/user/wampidy/media/Sand%20gardens/P3280004.jpg.html)

I considered rope but then it had a bit of a Japanese cowboy look. I was digging through the wood rack at ACE hardware and found some pretty flexible wood that I am sure will work. I cut a bunch of strips and I will add them to the edge overlapping all the joints which should make them pretty strong.

I was looking through the trim wood at the lumber yard trying to find something to use on my son's painting canvas frames and found a Waynes Coat(sp) top trim that I thought might work on my sand gardens. It was so easy peasy I just about started dancing. I got the top rail and fancy side all in one shot. If these sell I can see me using a lot of this stuff.

Should be putting finish on in a few days. Thanks for your interest.

I also went from one eighth plywood to one quarter because the thin stuff is warped too much. It might not be a problem with the new trim sides because they should straighten things out.

Things went good yesterday. The first lap of edge wood is glued on so today I will be adding the second and third at the same time.

I put wax paper down so I would not glue everything to the table, clamped the base down so it would not move then started gluing the edge in place. I used spring clamps to hold the edge in place while the glue dried. With the glue I am using I have to leave the pieces clamped for two hours. It still went pretty fast and I finished the first go around. I could only put on three pieces at a time then move over.

I finished the garden floor with the trim boards for sides. It looks pretty fancy even though it is just a rectangle so I blocked off a corner so I could add something there that will be outside the sand area. What I am going to put there is a secret for now but it is going to be so cool it will knock your socks off. (well maybe)

I am glad there is some interest in this project and appreciate all the great comments.

I really like this project.  I am in the process of planning out my back yard landscaping (my back yard is unfinished at the moment).  I will be incorporating all my piles of rocks into it.  I have been thinking about doing a small waterfall and faux riverbed lined with lapidary stone, but a Japanese garden gives me another idea to consider.

Also, since my Dad is a woodworker I love seeing any wood projects.

Me too I am enjoying your project immensely:) There were nothing I love better when I was little than to go play in my sandbox. My cats liked it too:) There is actually a sandbox in my back yard now that the people who lived here before had left. Sometimes I think about it strongly but then the neighbor would prolly take a picture of me sitting in a turtle and ruin my reputation:)
My brother had a little sand garden that someone had gave him and he gave it to me. Very peaceful and fun:) It is so restful just to rake, sometimes I used to hide my rocks in there too:)
What fine craftsmanship in your garden Jim:)

I'm actually considering adding a zen garden to the landscape in the yard.  I just need to plan it out and add the correct rocks etc to it.

Jim, I like your ideas with these sand gardens.
If you really want to go outside the box, try looking up images of Japanese gardens.  They have a lot more curved and flowing lines that you might find interesting to try.

If you really want to go outside the box, try looking up images of Japanese gardens.  They have a lot more curved and flowing lines that you might find interesting to try.

I checked those out before I started but I have some severe limitations even though Sara says I can fix anything. I do not have room to add a wood shop. lol

I managed to get some staining done (the last time because now I remember why I hate it) which was all that was left on three but I still have finishing touches on one left to do.

I added sand and some lines then for your viewing pleasure (I hope) I photographed them with a bunch of different rocks added in. These are not something that you can just sit down to and zip you are finished. It is going to take a lot of Zenning to finish one of these babies out which I guess is a good thing. If you get frustrated easy do not buy one of these. lol

What would a new batch of gardens be without a new batch of rakes. After sitting down and making some lines I am still concerned with the tines being too close together.

I was thinking about saving this one for me but I think I want a smaller one.

I made two like this but one is smaller than the other. I photographed the larger one first and now I can not tell which is which.

I think it switches to the smaller one here.

I have been thinking about putting down a thin layer of glue then add sand so there will always be sand in the bottom if someone just wants it for a display. Doesn't look like much without any sand.

Whadaya think?

I love them also, but I am having problems telling the overall size?

Beautiful!   :headbang:
The stones that look like mountains work the best in the design.   :icon_sunny:

I was afraid that it would be difficult to tell the size but wasn't sure how to do a good photograph with a ruler included. This may help a little. The tines in the rakes are the head ends of fancy toothpicks and the handles are 4.5 inches long and 1/8th inch in diameter. The lengths of the gardens range from 12 inches long and 6 inches wide to 14 inches long by 8 inches wide. Most of the stones are fist sized and under.

None of the rocks are glued down. The larger ones will stay put pretty good but the smaller ones will move real easy when bumped with the rake. I think they would be really difficult to ship with the rocks attached so if someone buys one they will have to glue down the stone wherever they want it. Also, if I do not glue a stone down people can choose the stone they want to go with their garden..

Wow, the workmanship on these is nice!  What a cool idea; I hadn't really wrapped my head around your concept, seeing the pics helps quite a bit.
