Title: The calm that kills collecting
Post by: lithicbeads on November 26, 2014, 08:41:39 PM
It has been almost a full year since we had a storm with waves large enough to clean the 5 to 8 feet of sand off the beaches and expose the interesting rocks below. I am hearing this complaint from all the way down the coast to California. This lack of strong normal storms has led to a lack of newly exposed rock in the streams also which has forced folks to go to extremes to find fresh areas to collect. All this has largely left me out of the game as I don't travel well at the moment. That said I always find two or three pieces of jade but as only about 1 out of 50 is worth cutting things have not been good. The massive kelp beds that formed after last years monster storm ( we usually have 3 to 6 monster storms) have not helped as they break apart and litter the beaches in winter. The bluffs pictured have no jade, they were formed after the glacier had delivered the jade so when they erode they just cover good things. The bluffs pictured are about 100 feet high and the day of monster waves last year occurred with two highs and virtually no low tides so the 8 to 13 foot waves ran up the bluffs about 60 feet eroding about 2 feet off the face of the bluff every few minutes. I watched a very strong tidal rip current form and drag the sediment from the bluffs out about 200 yards and then they turned south at a right angle and slowed depositing the sediment. This apparently energized the sea life in that area because huge kelp beds formed where I had only seen a tiny amount. Cold and dry winters of the last 5 years is killing the collecting. That said i got a good one and cut it and will try to post a picture tomorrow , turkey day , but I was just informed I have to haul hay before all else so maybe friday. Enjoy your holiday.

I feel for you Frank but there's nothing that kills the collecting urge like 8" of cold wet snow LOL

Same here Frank. If we could see them we could not pick them up because they are froze in for the winter.
Great photos though.
And a happy T day to ya'll too.

The urge doesn't go away with the snow, just the ability to collect.

I'm lucky that the best collecting for Poppy jasper is in the winter. I can collect other things all summer, and poppy all winter.

I haven't been to Secret Beach in awhile either. Last time I went there in September, I was finding football sized chunks of Jade. Maybe I'll go back soon...

We all need to rest up and eat today and then go poach on Good Earth's secret beach. At least some collecting still works. I feel for you frozen folks as I grew upwith that . ever tried ice fishing? I used to do a lot . not a lot of fishing involved just a lot of freezing things off.

Very nice outside to day and best of part of all the snakes are all gone to ground and no bad weather is forecast till the first of next week.

yes, there's a howling gale blowing outside and I expect the weatherman was right about the cold behind it; Says it's 9C out right now; 6:30pm so that's going to be a real drop if it happens....

Yah the ice is starting to  build Lloyd ! Won't be long it'll be frozen solid from end to end till at least the end of May :sad5: .
Shop heater heats the shop too comfortable  in about 15 minutes and the saw has it's own magnetic block heater attached to make the saw comfy . Now just to find some time to do some cutting  :coffee2:
