Title: Kookaburra shell
Post by: auscarver on December 14, 2018, 11:21:51 AM
My latest carving is a shell that looks like a Kookaburra that comes From Gladstone harbor in Queensland Australia, the little white one is the real shell, the stone is nephrite jade from my area, its VERY tough and hard, easily 6.5 hardness and finely felted, a blue green, a real challenge in this shape, I may inlay opal in the eye socket when completed, very early stages, sanding with 220 grit.

Lovely rough. That carving is a real smile maker, excellent idea.

Love it!  Your carving looks exactly like the shell.  Your artistic ability in stone is amazing to me.  It's gorgeous.

P.S.  That shell is way too cool.  I have never seen one before.

Thanks, my shell is around 55 mm long, sanding in all those nooks and crannies will take many hours, the jade is top shelf from my region, it could easily take over 150 hours to finish both sides, but I will take my time, I always try to find ideas that are new to gem carvings to catch the eye, another picture earlier in the carving process.
