Rules:
1) Cab must be made by you.
2) Cab must be made within the time period of this contest. NO pulling old cabs from your storage baskets!
3) As long as the basic shape is considered a cab it's golden. You can enter intarsias and carved top cabs such as cameos etc. Afterall this is the OUTRAGEOUS cab contest! We love freeform cabs! Pull out the stops y'all and give me the best you have!
4) One entry per person please!
5) Please show photos of your slabs and preforms if you can so we can see your thought process and how you did things.
6) No finished jewelry pieces. Just the cab(s).
7) Cab sets are OK. (think pendant and matching earrings.)
So have some fun! :hello: :headbang:

Working on something... freeform.... because the piece broke off the slab, so going to go with it. Loving this challenge :love9:

Hahahaha!! no, the Mascalero is a one shot deal, I have more of it and no two cabs are the same... Promise to bring something special and rare... at least I think it is and if I can work it. Haven't tried the material before... there isn't much I HAVE tried either though LOL! :headbang:
BTW, why wait for me to post, you can go first if you like, I already have mine planned, if it holds together... if not, I have a backup too :toothy10:
-
Ok I'll go first. Nephi Palm, I almost forgot to take a pic of the preform, the C on there is my wife's first initial this means don't give away or your dead! I took a pic of both sides finished, one looks like the rear of the storm the other has lighting strikes, I think it's a cloud lighting bugs!

Wow! that is stunningly gorgeous! :headbang: Beautiful job Sandsave! LOL! I know another fella on FB that if he goes to the wife with his recent makes, she just goes, "that one and that one and that one" and they are claimed before they are off the dop sticks. I have my special ones... first cab I ever made and first cab I ever made that I was wowed by the material... which is still unknown/unable to be found again.
I have new wheels just arrived yesterday, need to take pics of the slabs and I will get er done! Have one I want to do and a backup because I am not familiar with the material, just in case it doesn't go as planned :icon_thumright:

Beautiful, beautiful cab, SS! You have set the bar high at the start for this one ... :notworthy:
-
OK, so we're in January now. Any more cabs coming? :glasses9:
-
I am hoping to get wheel time... had something picked, hidden fracture... reshape is necessary OR go with the backup stone lol! Time... just never have enough of it ya know! LOL!
-
LOL, Amanda! You know we all like to wait until the last minute. :angel9:
-
Very nice Sandsave:) Love the textures in the pattern:)
-
I'm just a noob, but I'll post my rainforest jasper drop cab I'm going to be working on over the weekend if it turns out. Glad I read this, now I'll know to take pictures of the slab and preforms as I go.
-
We love it when new people post their cabs!!!! :headbang:

Well, I don't want to jinx it, but it looks like I might actually have one to post this weekend! Crossing my fingers!!!

Taps foot and waits for Adovbs:)

She's out there polishing right now, we just had to let the poultry out first. Before that, it's not light enough to work.
-
Ok, here it is... I am pretty pleased with how it turned out. Of course, because it's my own cab, I can see glaring at me all the things I want to do a better job on next time. :laughing6: But I suspect this will be the case for ... probably forever. And, it's only my third cab, so I'll get better.
I'll post the "process pictures" in the next post, because of the four pic limit. Also, these are camera photos, and not quite as sharp as I'd like. They make the polish look a bit less shiny than it really is. But I haven't found my light tent yet, so this will have to do.
-
Process photos:
The slab is photo 1. As you can see, I had originally marked this cab out as being longer. But after I started cutting it out of the slab, I had second thoughts about the shape and lopped about a third of the top off. I may try a long paddle shape again some day. Btw, you can see this slab has several problem areas - mainly significant size voids and cracks. It was a challenge laying out multiple cabs that missed the worst of them.
The preform is photo 2. I have another cab, a pendant cab that goes with the first two earring cabs I cut last weekend also in the picture. I may finish that in time for this contest.
The finer phase of rough out is photo 3.
The finer shaping is photo 4. This required another round on the fine grinding wheel before it was ready for polish. Still some angles and a few scratches/pits to grind off.

The cab looks like a necktie I used to wear in the 70's LOL
seriously though that is a great looking peice :headbang:

Ha!!! I didn't see that until you mentioned it, but it TOTALLY looks like a fat 70s tie! If I hadn't chopped it down, it would be a dead ringer for one! :laughing6:

Thanks! I'm pretty happy with it. Now that I've taken my contest pics, I'm grabbing out all my wire wrapping stuff to put it into a pendant setting. It seems to be to be perfect color combination for a copper wire wrap. I'm not that good at wire wrapping yet, but it's just as well because a simple setting on this is probably for the best. I'll post my final product in the wire wrapping/jewelry thread when I'm happy with it.

I really like this green and the shape of the stone. I think it will be beautiful with copper wrapping:) Please show it again when you are finished.

Jim took some better pictures for me this evening, and the finished pendant/necklace is now in the wirewrapping section. :toothy10:

This one gave me a few scares. Mostly because I wasn't keeping the polishing pad wet enough and the leather grabbed the cab and sent it soaring into the air a couple of times... Luckily, we work on our porch and our yard and plantings are rather new (and thanks to the poultry, it's rather bare in between) so I was able to find the place it landed, wash it off, and press on. :laughing6:

I really like that sitting sun scene you are showing to the left of this stone. Did you finish it yet or is that beauty to be shown later?
I have messed up so many things. Either sanded too thin or dropped or flew off on its own. I had a really cool design of a filigree owl going on with opal eyes and then I burned part of it off. LOLOL Only rocks make us work this hard and keep coming back for more:)
-
That is absolutely lovely!

Knowing i am home from work all week, it sucks that i cant just walk out in the back yard and make a cab!
Its killing me!

Randy you have extenuating circumstances. Believe me we understand that you can't go out and cab right now. :sad5: I hope your wife is better soon!
-
i cant handle it, im going to win this contest.
I want my photo in that spot up there lol!
lemme see if i can make a cab without having to run in and out of the house every 5 minutes.

Looks like Variscite.
I love the cab sets you create! :headbang:
-
Accented very nice:)
I always like to see green:)
Will you be completing the set yourself or will you be selling the stones?
-
Okay, here's my entry.. This was a freebie that I got at a show over the summer..
I love that triple cab set! Wow!
