Title: Identification Help Requested
Post by: Smashtoad on January 12, 2015, 07:20:58 PM
Hi Guys,
First time poster and forum newbie here.  I have an ID problem that I'll bet you guys can help me with.  I bought this slab in 1999 when I was dabbling with tumbling.  I now have a very special project that I'd like to use it for, but cannot remember what it is.

Something bouncing around in my mind says it might be some kind of jade.  It feels very heavy for its size...to me at least.  Definitely heavier than unakite.  I have a nice chunk of it to compare.

If you guys would give me your thoughts I'd really appreciate it.  I don't want to start trying to shape it without knowing exactly what tools to get and how to proceed.

No doubt in my mind that it is jade. Not quite knowledgeable enough  to tell you where it came from though.

:notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy: One hell of a sweet hunk of jade too.

Ha!  I guess it is a block.  Shows you how much I know.  Really glad to know it's jade.  It's been so long since I bought it...I don't remember even who I bought it from.  I bought my tumbler and the block of unakite from them too.

Thanks for help.

Here's the unakite chunk.  I'd like to do something with it too, but am not afraid to admit that I'm intimidated as hell by the idea. I've always been a rockhound of sorts, but mainly in the realm of decorating my terrariums. Collecting arrowheads, spearheads, and buying my wife nice cab jewelry...she loves the stuff.  I'm glad I found this forum.  Hopefully you guys can keep me from ruining this piece of jade.  I don't remember what I paid for it...just been too long.

what state and area do you live in?
It may help us with your local geographical rock formations and the glacial movements that went through it.

I'm near Indianapolis.  The stones and tumbling equipment were ordered from someone online, so none of it is local.  I'm a reptile and amphibian hobbyist, and an normally much better at remembering this kind of stuff.   I'll poke around online and see if I can stumble onto who I bought the stuff from.  Maybe they'll remember the stone...long shot.

Dang that is a big ole hunk of rock. And I leave the identification to the experts:) Beautiful:) And you are lucky to have a piece of Jade that big. Some types of Jade go for hundreds of dollars.
