Title: Ring-a-ling

I was going to go with "I am in love with a rock" in the heading then looked at the shape of the rock and decided RTH was not ready for something like that. lmao AND I am NOT that much in love with it.

I have had this ring blank getting lost and finding, repeat, repeat almost since I started making rings. My plan was to do some carving on it but I have yet to start carving on hard stone and I did not want this ring to be a practice piece.

A few weeks ago my ex daughter-in-law was by to visit and try to talk me out of more rocks and this plank showed up from somewhere. She suggested that I just polish it the way it is and a ring was born.

I have had some problems with breakage, more with the thulite, so I was trying to figure out a way to at least slow that down. I have mentioned before that wherever I go I am checking for new wire and cord. Some time back and somewhere I don't remember I came upon this flat wire and brought some home. It has been in the way around here for a while (the best way to find a use for something) and the ring and wire both ended up in my field of vision. Bingo. I scuffed up the ring so the glue would stick and sanded the metal to just a luster because I knew it would get beat up over time.

Still have a little glue to clean up and I need to grind and polish the inside edge so it is not so sharp but basically it is finished.

BTW the metal is aluminum and I will not try to pass it off as anything else. How do I make fine print on here?

This is a cool idea for a ring, seems very unique to me.  If you squint your eyes the print gets smaller.

Lovely texture in that stone. Like that kind of combination. Now make that a signet ring with a carved design on the top and no-one will ever look for the fine-print on the metal.  :icon_tongue:

I haven't seen a better way to protect the shank from fracture!!! It adds another dimension to the piece too.

Hey JIm have you ever done any of the Tofa Stone carving for casting? I was thinking about that today and it is very limited on what I could find online.

Thanks for all the good vibes, I really need it tonight. I have been working on the ring inside edge and it is driving me crazy. I have tried every little polishing thing I have and can not get it to polish like I want it. Grinding it round is no problem but I have used several different grit impregnated burrs, a wore out flapper sanding burr, stone burrs, a polish impregnated fur ball burr and a four step pin polishing set with about that many different results and no polish on the stone. It is real easy to see that the stone polishes up nice so all of my little polishing thingies are junk or I am dumb ignorant about how to polish hard stone with little thingies. I do not have the patience that KK has so polishing by hand is out. ????????????????????????????????????????

I think this is the reason I do not carve hard stone. Trying to polish all the little ziggies and zaggies just does not work for me. This is not my first frustrating attempt but it may be the last. If I can spin the ring which I do with all my round rings it is easy peasy. I think I will just go to bed and hope my good fairy will fix it during the night.
