First cabber. Experimented with a few rocks I got from Emerald Hollow Mine. Just wanted to get some basic shapes. They are step 3 of 5.

Quite a color shift on that last one. How do you like working on the slant cabber?

I love it. Just finished my first batch of practice stones. The first thing I noticed is when I got to step 3, I could tell what I missed in the initial shaping. I wasn't going to go back to step 1. I'll do a better job with better light and take more time on each step the next time. I also did this by hand. I'm going to try a dob stick next time. Also, if it isn't in the rock at the beginning, no amount of grinding or polishing is going to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.

The first pic is under a regular flashlight. The second in under the LEDs in my Dining Room. It didn't look like that in the "view finder" but it turned out that way when I uploaded it from my phone to the computer. I use Kodak Photo Editor to crop them.

Pictures of the finished stones. Again, this was just practicing. I know so little about this and will only learn by doing it. I also have 3 tumblers and am learning from that. The garnets I dug were obviously low quality. They only got smaller and not shinier through all the tumbler steps. The little bits and pieces are red and clear. Lesson learned. Anyway, here's the best 3 in my opinion, but nowhere near where I want to get. #1 is a garnet, #2 is tiger eye that I wanted to expose the top of and #3 I think is flint.

Because cameras and phones actually have software that manipulates the photo to try and enhance it to make the "best" looking image you have to after the fact in post processing bring it back to what is real or what you saw. Often it is the other way around with landscape photographers in that their memory of the day was brighter and more colorful than the picture represented. The human eye is amazing. The reason I asked is going from tan in Flashlight to blue in LED is not normal. There can be a color change depending on the light but it definitely looked like something else was affecting the color like if it was fluorescent under UV.

Some stones do color shift, but of course it could be something else, too. Have fun with your cabber.

Even if stones do color shift, which they do. The background on which the stone is photographed does not have the same color shift tendencies such as the photographs shown where the backgrounds have also shifted in color space. Have you taken a picture in simple daylight? Post that picture to compare with these 2. Even with LED there are Daylight, Warm and Cool LED's that each give off different color spectrums.

I only use Daylight 5000k LEDs. I can't explain the color change. Except that my phone did turn the water blue when I had a LED light under a fountain at night. I'll try to get pictures of them in natural light soon.
Meanwhile, tonight I made my first pieces of jewelry. :blob1: On the first one I ground the gem just a little to small for the frame. The next 2 came out almost perfect. All together I spent 5 hrs. I also managed to grind my middle fingernail down enought to draw blood. :LOLOL:

It's a long and convoluted story, and far from finished - but the gist of it is that "color temperature" or "daylight" labels tell us nothing about how messed up the emission spectrum of a light source is compared to sunlight that our eyes evolved with.
Most self-proclaimed "daylight" LEDs in the market today are notorius for the prominent blue peak in their emission spectrum. While this might trick your eyes and brain into perceiving the overall scene as acceptable, certain colour combinations will still be off. This blue peak will also ruin attempts of your digital camera to get the white balance right - and that is precisely what we see in the images above.
If using LEDs for photography, aim for higher-end products with CRI above 90. That is one metric that actually matters. Another important metric would be the flicker intensity.

This thread got off track. I posted the picture of that stone because I thought it was strange that it showed up that way. Wearing a great looking stone will look different when you show it off at home, at work or a club/bar/restaurant.

Oh I will keep at it. It's amazing how a rock or petrified wood looks when you polish it. It's like art. You want to show it off. By comments are you referring to the sayings after my name? Wanted something different and.......to make people chuckle or spit out their coffee.

No the comment on grinding your fingernail to bleed, since I do the same minus the blood. As for your comments though (signature line). When I worked for BMW my signature line changed often and many times I was asked to be "more professional" Lol, silly thing to ask me. They were things like
"that light at the end of the tunnel is actually a train coming your direction" or " if they pronounce Arkansas "Are-Can-Saw" shouldn't Kansas be pronounced "Can-Saw"
or "there are more people living in Los Angeles than all of Wyoming"
My friends was the best though, he worked in the Strategic Air Command and his signature line was "Bringing Democracy to the world one bomb at a time"

Labradorite or Spectrolite. Fun stuff if you get the crystals lined up properly to get the flash center on the cab domes.
