Found this the other day.

It's a bit on the startlingly colorful side for Wasco co. material, most of our wood is poorly scilified and fairly, well, wood-looking. The log looks to be in place still, with this as float off one end. Most of the log is red and orange, not the blues and greens on this piece. It's weathering off a ashy welded tuff slope. I am going to see if I can free up the rest of the log and find a good full round in there somewhere. On BLM, so playing by the state's 25 lbs a day / 250 lbs a year rules as best I can estimate :P public BLM too, just in a spot apparently no one's been in a while. My showpiece for "don't believe people who tell you there's nothing new left to find."

I sliced the face off this piece today and cut one other piece- it's brittle, agatized in the middle, opalized on the outer edges, with pockets of zeolite-like fluff that does not enhance structural stability at all :P I need to dig back further and see if there's more solid material still encased in the ash rind! The above piece face-cut nicely and has only one crack so it should hold together fine. I will post pictures once it's washed!
