Title: Is this a Checkerboard Harlequin?
Post by: John Robinson on March 13, 2021, 05:14:00 AM
Hello, it has been a while since I bothered y’all, but I wanted to get second opinions...
(Hmmm(?) is the second second opinion, the third opinion?)
Anyway, did I get lucky?
Is this a Harlequin?

More of a ribbon pattern, with the distinctive bands like that.

I thought that this one had a ribbon pattern because of the potch lines(?)
(BTW - imaged Photoshopped with Clarity and Dehaze filters only)

The second one looks like typical color bars that have been sliced perpendicular to how they formed.

Just sliced a piece of Mintabie here that looked like that from the sides of the chunk. Sawed it parallel to to color bars to get larger face surface on the brighter stuff in between the darker lines. Unfortunately, they don't always face up as nicely as one would hope.

Just the luck of the draw for an opal cutter when that happens. Always good to round some edges before sawing to look for clues about how it might face up in that orientation.

Well, while I here, how about this one? It has a nasty stain, but I do not plan to throw it away.

This first opal is amazing.  The colors are crazy brilliant!
