Title: Hot springs and cave formations (pic and video heavy)
Post by: VegasJames on January 06, 2022, 01:26:53 AM
Took a hike to some local hot springs. Things have changed so much since the last time I was down there. Went further than usual though and visited a neat cave full of hot water and some interesting cave formations. Sorry for the poor quality of the cave videos. Between the low light and steam it made taking videos difficult.

Hot springs are being lost in Washington as they are being silted in in our big floods or the forest service access roads are no longer maintained ( they largely let them go to hell until they harvest timber) and at least  one was claimed and closed. Another I know of was lost as the access road was switched to the other side of the river and the area is no longer traveled and no one can remember where it was.

The rocks are mostly carbonates, I presume? That white-with-black-webbing could be magnesite. Too bad there is not enough manganese in the area...!

Yes, should be primarily carbonates. Lots of different minerals in the soil, including a lot of iron. Some iron stains the hot springs outside and some plated the stones in a shiny silver coating on some of the stones under the water.

The black is likely manganese as is the purple. Manganese is everywhere around here, mainly as desert varnish. There is also amethyst in the area.
