Title: Slabs from the Q
Post by: MrsWTownsend on February 01, 2015, 12:02:23 PM
I forget the names for a lot of these

From Christopher and Lori Anthony at the Pow Wow ( http://calapidary.com/ (http://calapidary.com/) / https://www.facebook.com/ChristopherAnthonyJewelry (https://www.facebook.com/ChristopherAnthonyJewelry) ):

I think this is CA Poppy Jasper
(http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh240/MrsWTownsend/Stone/Quartzsite%202015/quartzsite2015025.jpg) (http://s257.photobucket.com/user/MrsWTownsend/media/Stone/Quartzsite%202015/quartzsite2015025.jpg.html)

Mexican Velvet Obsidian- the cutting oil was really repelling the water off of these.
(http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh240/MrsWTownsend/Stone/Quartzsite%202015/quartzsite2015016.jpg) (http://s257.photobucket.com/user/MrsWTownsend/media/Stone/Quartzsite%202015/quartzsite2015016.jpg.html)(http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh240/MrsWTownsend/Stone/Quartzsite%202015/quartzsite2015018.jpg) (http://s257.photobucket.com/user/MrsWTownsend/media/Stone/Quartzsite%202015/quartzsite2015018.jpg.html)

Can't remember where this plume agate is from
(http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh240/MrsWTownsend/Stone/Quartzsite%202015/quartzsite2015013.jpg) (http://s257.photobucket.com/user/MrsWTownsend/media/Stone/Quartzsite%202015/quartzsite2015013.jpg.html)

I also got this slab.  I can't remember the name of the stone, it has crystals like actinolite in it.  It was really bright outside- the color is actually a concord grape/ plum purple but you can't tell by these pics...
(http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh240/MrsWTownsend/Stone/Quartzsite%202015/quartzsite2015019.jpg) (http://s257.photobucket.com/user/MrsWTownsend/media/Stone/Quartzsite%202015/quartzsite2015019.jpg.html)

Slab from another vendor at the Pow Wow, he called it Morrolite or something like that
(http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh240/MrsWTownsend/Stone/Quartzsite%202015/quartzsite2015021.jpg) (http://s257.photobucket.com/user/MrsWTownsend/media/Stone/Quartzsite%202015/quartzsite2015021.jpg.html)

These are polished ammonites I got from a place which turned out to be horrifically expensive so they don't get free advertising  on our forum :D (they were charging over a buck a gram for all of their cabs and even with a discount thanks to Amanda, who they didn't even give a lubricant when they told her how much her selections were, these were still $0.70/ gram) but I bought them anyway...)  :P  I normally do not give cabs the time of day because I like making them myself but the 2 jasper filled halves spoke to me and the rest just happened.

I thought their pricing was decent on their beads, since most of my purchase with them was beads I had no complaints.  Cabs, the way they worked was the more you bought, the less a gram you paid.  I purchased larimar from them in cab form for a dollar a gram last year.  In fact I think it was less than that after the cost of all the cabs was added up.  Then again, maybe I'm not a good judge of cab price since I don't cut them myself.  I like their metal beads in packets they have and I did well with a score on those.  It was another case of the more you bought, the less you paid.  Yeah I dropped a lot of money at their booth, however they treated me well last year and this year they were decent too, even gave me an extra discount because of my allergy to the smoke from the owner's cigar (they had kicked him out of the tent away from everyone due to the stench).

Those plume agates remind me of the buttes in the Grand Canyon - the colors are really vivid!

The guy I bought the green Morrolite from said it was called one thing but this came from a different state (an M state like Maine or Michigan I think) so he was calling it by a different name.  It is a fat, heavy slab.  Christopher said the red plume is Picket Plume (out of the cady mountains- good call :D).

Boy that does look similar, doesn't it?

Someday I will actually write these names down when I buy them so later, in my dain bramaged state, I might accidentally remember them... (http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh240/MrsWTownsend/smilies/doh.gif) (http://s257.photobucket.com/user/MrsWTownsend/media/smilies/doh.gif.html)

That sounds A LOT like planning ahead doesn't it.

The top photo looks to be Leopardskin Jasper. I like working with that material. Made some pretty cabs out of it!

1st pic is leopard skin "jasper".
3rd is red plume from the South Cady mtns.
4th is Purple Feldspar with Actinoite from Mt. Gleason above Acton. CA. I collect this material and although the Actinolite does take an okay polish the Feldspar takes a
high polish.  This stuff is great for spheres.
9th is more South Cady Mtn's material.

On the green one Easterners call it Listwanite, West Coasters call it Mariposite. There was a recent article in rock and Gem about it.

Neat rocks!  The one labeled "Can't remember where this plume agate is from" Is Christmas Tree jasper from around Ludlow.  The green is pretty soft so watch for undercutting.
