Title: Testing , testing - pick up sticks?
Post by: lithicbeads on March 10, 2015, 11:51:39 AM
Packlitic and I ( I am the old guy pictured with my ass on the log) went out to test my new old body. Jade was secondary to testing my ability to take on steepness and navigate fast cold water with a very uneven bottom. Pretty safe place in the sense that you could surely brain yourself on a rock but it would be quite hard to drown which is definitely not the case with other areas we used to go. Her patience paid off in that it was a positive result despite going with only one crutch  and a hiking pole replacing the other crutch. Hiking poles are great ( do not however put your hands in the wrist loops in rough terrain as a trip can pivot you over the pole head first) but they do not directly support weight as a crutch does.
We found about 200 pieces of jade , mostly junk like the one I am holding while sitting on the log but we took home a promising  bunch to cut. Most were mostly buried with just a tip showing as the white skinned one under the hammer .
I couldn't believe that the water was so warm , about 60 degrees I would say. I did not fall so there was no need for pick up sticks.
One of the above statements was a bald faced lie.

200 pieces of Jade???  That explains why the water is running green!  :D

You and Packlithic are awfully lucky to live in such beautiful places and I am really glad to see that you are able to start to get out and enjoy them again Frank!  Thank you for sharing!!!

Just like I remember you,  rock-hounding.   You had the knack of finding cool stuff while others walked past, mainly me.  Good to see you two outdoors again.    Brings back memories of times spent with good friends.

Man that is cool seeing you out and about. What is the temperature there Frank? It isn't shorts weather here unless you are my son. He likes cool temperatures and the cold doesn't bother him either. I'm the opposite, for some reason I am always cold. But even though our winter was severe temperature wise, it didn't bother me this year as much as in past years.

Low forties air temp and high 30's water temp. The water never gets above 50 and the air seldom above the mid sixties ever. This is good as this is a salmon spawning stream and they like it cold.

AWESOME!
So good to see you out getting back into the swing of things!
Pretty soon you'll be out where with just one crutch!  Then before you know it, no crutches!
Rock on!   :icon_sunny: :icon_sunny:

Way to go Frank and packlithic. Frank the stubborn old goat and packlithic the heart of a saint. I am truly happy for you both.

Wow! I guess I need to toughen up a bit. I like it hot, I would be wearing a winter coat and there you are walking around in shorts, wading in the water. What temperature do you keep your house?

60 degree water....LOL! :toothy12:  We don't even get that in the desert for another couple months!

Good to see you out and about.  Finding jade is good.  Working out the new (old) body is better.  Not drowning is best of all.

It is always my goal not to drown  something that has crossed my mind  a few thousands times in my travels. I like it warm in the house Bob but when on the move the cold actually distracts one from the chronic pain and no prescriptions needed.
