Anyone know what these are?
« on: November 02, 2018, 03:23:14 PM »

Hi all,

I have acquired a collection of 20yr old+ cabs and am trying to figure out what some are. For the first group, I attached a close up of one that has a metallic, silver?, inclusion. For the cab I am holding, I am wondering what the red material might be. And finally, what looks to be variscite or green turquoise...says from Ajax Mine Nevada. If any of you have any ideas on what and from where you think these are, I would love to hear from you. Thanks as always, Lydia

I will take a guess at #3,4,5,7 in top picture as being Larsonite or gary green jasper a petrified bog wood found around the Oregon ,Idaho border. :Digging:

The 1st cab in the top picture looks like Owyhee jasper.  The others look like Vistaite, a jasper from Oregon.  The red in your copper complex stone is probably cuprite, another copper ore.

I agree that the first group looks like vistaite (high-silica rhyolite from east of Prineville, Oregon). Comes in several color and pattern combos, including the yellow in the top-left. Look like some great quality pieces. Interesting copper-complex in the second - agree that the red is likely cuprite. I'm wondering if the third group could be chalcosiderite (just doesn't look blue enough for variscite, IMO). Not easy visually to distinguish between some varieties of greener turquoise, variscite, faustite and chalcosiderite, though.
