California serpentine and rhodenite
« on: June 13, 2016, 08:45:05 PM »

Had a fun trip to northern California, I made a detour down hy 49 to collect serpentine for spheres. the best part was it is a road cut that goes right thru a serpentine out crop. so all I had to do was pitch it down to the bottom of the hill and load the truck! I must of got over 800 lb. different shades of green and different patterns.
than to Redbluff. met up with the group at the forest service camp ground about 50 miles up Hy 36. it was over an hour driving on the dusty forest roads (12 vehicles making dust) it took a while to figure out the collecting but once I found a spot to dig that wasn't old tailings and digging up black rocks and chipping rocks I was able to find it. mostly a light pink with the spider patterns. I did find one 50 lb rock that I have in the saw cutting for spheres. I was able to get my 100 lb limit but have a lot of the black manganese rock.
everyone was covered in black dust. I made some new friends when I pulled my 7gal water jug out and offered to let everone clean up. I forgot to take pictures at the spider mine, sorry but here is a picture of the end cut off of the 50Lb rock.

Man u r so lucky to be able to find these places!  I been out there hounding in the west and without a guide it is very challenging. You must do a lot of research because book directions stink! LOL. Such as "after about 2 miles turn left and drive to the lightning blasted stump and turn right" of course the book was written in the seventies with no pics! ALOL

It helps when you are surrounded by mountains and rocks and making friends. The books can help but things change. A friend of mine found a book from the late 40's that had a location of moss agate we spent three years looking for that spot before we found it. The mine companies had cut new roads and changed. The old roads so none of the mileage was any good. The serpentine is in one of the books but it's hard to miss when you drive around the curve and there is a big green shinny road cut. If you make it out this way I will try and
Make time to go with you. Some of the best stuff is pretty remote like the black rock geodes.

Will do but I have to clean and replace the oil in the 24" saw, not looking forward to it it take over 15gal
Before I can cut anymore.  I have to call my friend and see if he want to split a 55gal drum.
I Thought you left for McDermit.
