Can I use this motor?
« on: October 07, 2016, 11:31:02 AM »

I got an opportunity to pick up a free Baldor 1hp single phase 1725 rpm motor. Not sure if it works.

My question is this: I have a 12" saw that needs a motor; is this going to be unsuitable for it? I know it's way more motor than I need, but is that necessarily a bad thing?

I am an electrical and motor idiot; so please be kind.

A 1 HP motor will certainly work for your 12" saw, but it's way overkill. But latch on to that motor anyway. It'll be good trading material with someone needing a motor for a 24" or larger saw.

1/3 HP would be enough for your 12" saw. Maybe you could find someone who would trade a couple of 1/3 or 1/2 HP motors for the 1 HP.

In this hobby, one can never have enough spare motors & pulleys in a variety of HP's & sizes.

I agree; never pass up a motor like that. It will work for your saw, and any bigger saw you get in the future. Trading would be good too.

Got it! Need to open it up and see if it's wired for 110 or 220, and then see if it runs. It came with a pulley on the shaft and I even picked up a belt guard, so hopefully I can set it up soon.

I have the shaft, pulley, blade and box for an old Lortone; I will have to see what I can cobble together. I have two 6" trim saws, and a Home Depot 8" tile saw; but none of these are really any good at slabbing rocks. They bind if I try to do any more than trim slabs, especially on agate and jade. I've been using the big saws at my clubhouse, but I only get up there once and week and sometimes you just want to cut a bigger rock!
