I don't think I posted these finished yet.
Polished the pink and blue cabs. The pink is "Wasco Cherry" agate and the blue is "Starry Night" agate, both of which are small local deposits that I named so I didn't have to keep calling them "the blue rock from under the tree at the top of the ridge above the reservoir" etc. etc. Starry Night is a short vein in solid basalt and varies from the blue flecked material to a dark webbed blue-green and grey. Some chunks have a really nice vibrant red and orange streak through them but it isn't terribly solid and tends to pit and absorb oil. The flecks are also not solid, so the surface of the stone will always have a little texture to it. My polish is not perfect either! But we're working on it. Because the material is fractured, the easiest way to work with it is to freeform from the fragments a rock breaks into. I have a few slabs, but they pick their own shapes with internal fracture lines.
The Cherry is coming out of a rhyolite flow uphill from the basalt and a couple miles away, but on the same ridge. It has healed fractures, so in the right light vertical lines show up inside the stone. Really interesting stuff, I'm getting into teggs with this in the core now and it's pretty stunning.
