They should be at the right hand side of your posting - upper right hand corner of your posting to be exact.

modify and delete are only optional until 90 minutes after a post to prevent people from deleting topics at will.

Its not meant to be heavyhanded, but to prevents people that wish to leave the site to delete everything they have posted too or when someone gets pissed
It ruins topics.
I figured 90 minutes would be sufficient time to preview a topic or reply after posting it.

Although i have the power to make everything come back in a few clicks, its time consuming and i would rather be playing than working every minute i am in the forums.

i just upped it to 120 minutes
That is way more than enough time to edit or remove a wrongly posted topic or a mess up.

Pardon my French but it looks like it is going to be a bit inconvenient and useless. If a person gets pissed and leaves all they have to do is move the location of their photos and we end up with words only.

Secondly, I have gone back and altered tuts and posts where I have figured out a better way or made some kind of improvement. To make a whole new thread would take too much time so the info would not be passed along.

This is where if you must make changes, then please advise one of the five admins here or any of our numerous moderators and we can help you.   :blob9:  We are literally a PM away if you need to make any changes to tutorials etc.  And if someone does decide they are pissed and wants to delete links to their pictures, that's fine, we can remove the posting entirely or rewrite the tutorial and insert new pictures.

The rule was put into place because several of us on other forums have watched someone ask a question, folks have posted answers, and then the original poster decided they didn't like the answers they got - which were helpful to others - and they deleted their own thread.  It's annoying and doesn't help the people who actually were helped by the thread even if the original poster didn't like the answers.  Deletion of your own threads simply because you don't like the answers someone has given you is fairly equivalent online to a temper tantrum.   :hiding:

So if you really must edit a thread or delete something, just PM an admin or a mod and we will be happy to help you out.   :headbang:

The good news is that on this forum...
1) No idle purges.  On other forums after a 90 day idle period you may be deleted.  Not here.  We believe our forum members both active and inactive are the value of the forum.
2) We don't make policy changes without a vote from forum members.
3) We won't outwardly ask folks for donations to the forum, we find that in poor taste.  We feel that if folks really want to donate, they will.  If we find we are short on funds for the forum, most likely we will put items up for sale and obtain the funding that way.
4) If one admin needs to take time off for any reason, we have four other admins to step in and share the load.  The same goes with the moderators.  No one single person bears the brunt of the work.  This means that there should never be forum shutdowns because an admin decided they no longer wanted to run the forum.

I never noticed that happening on other forums so I doubt that it happened frequently and if you have to put together a new tut anyway I do not see the difference.

Pretty much the same as everywhere, a couple of bad apples makes it a pain in the butt for the good people.

I dealt with it regularly over on George's forum.  I would get PM's from people, "Hey what happened to so-and-so's topic, did you delete it?  There was information in that thread I was using."  Nope I didn't delete it.  George or I would check the moderation log and would find the original poster had deleted it.  Annoying.  Maybe an occasional poster would not see it happening, but as admins and mods, you know because you are getting the messages from other forum members about what happened to it.

Phish has dealt with it as well over on another forum he runs.  So we just decided when building this forum, to put into the forum controls to only be able to delete or edit postings for a certain amount of time.  It tends to solve the problem.

hahaha Well I guess you could call someone with 5000 posts, unknown number of tuts, got a carving section off the ground and read every post on RTH in the last three years a casual poster.

But kicking a stone horse is no fun.

I am seriously not logged into RTH to much - maybe a few times a year.  Yeah I know I'm bad about that, but I tend to have so much else going on..
Like today I'm playing domestic goddess - baked a cake, made home made buttercream frosting for it, then the whole thing will go in the fridge once I frost it.  Tomorrow I make the lasagna and give my hubby a nice 40th Birthday!   :headbang:

I still have a boatload of boxes to unpack and medications to get refilled at the pharmacy today, and I should pull out the vacuum and give this house a once-over...
