18" Great Weatern slab saw
« on: May 19, 2016, 02:29:05 PM »

While recuperating from an operation last year I kept busy by refurbishing my 18" Horizontal Greatwestern Slab saw. It has a two panel piano hinge folding top. Hydraulic controlled feed rate and automatic mechanical shut off.

We have a 24" Great Western saw in our club's workshop and it is a great saw. Ours has a polycarbonate hinged cover so we can see inside as it operates.

This particular saw was used by Gallo Winery in Modesto to cut through the glass bottles that they were manufacturing to see the thickness of the walls as a quality check. This process was replaced by a laser to check the walls so the machine was surplus. It actually was using water as the coolant/lubricant but they cleaned and emptied it routinely so there was no rust.

I have an 18" and a 24" Great Western. The 24 is down right now because I have worn out the cross feed rod threads from so much use and havent gotten around to making a new one.
