Hornitos Poppy Jasper Trip
« on: July 15, 2016, 08:52:20 PM »

Wish me luck. The Mariposa Gem and Mineral Club is going to the Hornitos Poppy Jasper claim tomorrow. The claim is owned by a local doctor and he takes us there every couple of years. I got skunked last time. I'll post pictures if I find some.

I'm putting my camera in the car now..... along with my GPS. There is supposed to be some other stuff nearby, from the same volcanic system. I want to find some of that too. It's not on the claim, but on BLM lands, so it's available without permission.

I got skunked last time.... not even a pebble worth keeping. This time.... over 50 pounds of good stuff! There were about 10 of us and many left early because they got enough. The largest piece I got was about half a basketball size. I helped a guy dig out a bigger piece. He'll send me a slab later.

What I got is soaking in a bucket. Next week I'll have time to get some of the dirt off of it. I'll get some pictures then and maybe a slice or two of the smaller pieces.

The volcanic source was about a mile away. Lots of basalt that got darker in color the closer we got to the jasper vein. We knew we had reached the other side of the vein when the basalt appeared again.

The owner of the claim said that my Subaru would make it. I'm glad I hitched a ride in a Jeep. Anything other than a real 4WD with high clearance would have made it. A regular street car would not have made it 1/4 mile down this road.

Give me a chance to put my saw back together and maybe I'll have some nice Hornitos Poppy Jasper to trade.

I was going to cut some of the bigger pieces today, and take lots of pictures.... but... the temperature outside is about 103 deg. It's just too hot. Instead, I'm stuck inside doing housework.

Tomorrow will be cooler; only 101.

Haha. The overnight lows here have been in the mid 90s with daytime highs around 115.  I still spent about 4 hours working in my shop today.  Just turn on a fan, keep a big glass of water close by and plan to sweat a lot.  Its when the temps drop below 50 that I turn into a big baby and refuse to do any work!

I got tired of getting hot or cold in the garage so a couple of years ago had a 12' X 16' shop built. Insulated it real good put AC and heat in it, I have been a happy boy ever since.  :laughing4:

I have an extra swamp cooler. I'm thinking of using that in my shop. It's just too hot to install it.

I cut some of the smaller pieces on my trim saw. Nothing worth photographing. I did cut some white plume agate that looks nice. That stuff is hard to photograph though.
