I'm cutting a cube for a sphere from a piece of snowflake obsidian. Has a tight pattern on the outside so I thought it would make a great sphere.  This is a cut with the grain.
It's a Blizzard!!!!!

Our club is going on an obsidian trip next weekend.... if Tioga Pass is open. I don't know of any snowflake obsidian where we're going, but there will be some interesting stuff. I'll let you know what I pick up.

I hope you have better Luck than I did. I kept getting scratches in it so I gave it to my friend and let him give it a try. He used diamond paste on PVC cups and had the same problem. We figured out that  small flakes were coming off were causing the scratching.  Looked at the stone with a loup to find it. Maybe I got a bad rock? Chris had bought some snowflake at an estate sale and didn't have any problems, there were a lot fewer flakes than I had in my stone.

     Snowflake Obsidian has a bad habit of drying out if it sits in the sun for years. All obsidian that is surface collected may have this problem but I ran into it a lot with Snowflake and a bit with Mahogany. If I dug down a couple feet there was never a problem.That piece looks very stable and should take a good polish. I had Richardson's Ranch cut me several Obsidian Spheres years ago when Johnny ran the show. The polish was perfect. They are a friendly bunch and may be able to give you a few tips on Obsidian if you run into trouble. neal
