Sentinels a new experiment in Biggs jasper
« on: June 21, 2015, 03:26:32 AM »

"Sentinentels" or is the plural Sentinels?

Unlike the usual carving where one tries to lift off the subject as much as possible, this time round I tried to keep the fantastic natural scenic nature of the stone intact and impart an additional complimentary subject on the surface only to blend into the background.

First ever attempt to do that, so failed miserably as the image is still clearly visible on both sides.
Still needs a bit more work, but no more major changes are to be expected.

Rough preform

Thanks for looking, Kurt

What a fabulous idea, Kurt!  I don't think you failed at all -- you're just not done yet!  I think it's beautiful.    :icon_sunny:

Failure is maybe too big a word. Baby-steps suits the skill-level better. :DRUNKS:

Will have to figure out how to polish the hair and forehead without loosing texture. :Bash:

Heya Kurt I have a thought on how to polish the forehead and hair without losing texture.  I actually saw a post elsewhere on how someone did this.

Do you have a mayonnaise jar around?  Fill it with some various grits of sand, some fine diamond grit, a drop of dish soap and some water.  Insert the piece, screw on the lid tightly.  Roll the jar back and forth under foot for a few hours while you watch TV or read a book.  Might take a couple days of this to get the desired polish - good exercise and less room for error.

 :icon_sunny: Instant manual tumbler......  :LOLOL:

Would that jar have to be filled to a certain percentage?

I would say leave some room for movement, probably no more than 3/4 full.
