Got Seeds?
« on: August 18, 2014, 07:22:08 PM »

I just ran an inventory of my garden seed supply - just vegetables, fruit and herbs.  Not counting flowers or the seed I got from my friend Phil earlier this year.  I have a list closing in on 175 items long!

That said, drop me a PM with your email address and I will email you my inventory list to see if you want any of the seed.  Please note I am in the Southwest, a dry desert climate, and what grows here might not grow where you are!

We are planting our winter garden this week and I ate my first peach yesterday and my first apple , a Williams Pride today. I have about a dozen kinds of fruit coming in. Going to be busy after our vacation.

So I was going through my inventory, found some seeds that I know won't do well here in the Phoenix area.  Thought I had gotten rid of all those.  Anyways I'll be pulling those and sending them along to someone in a cooler climate.

I'm waiting on the arrival of some small glassine envelopes so I can package up some seeds for Christopher.

We have some extra seeds of a few types, but unfortunately nothing that will stand up to the sun and heat of Phoenix. Everything we have has to like cooler temps with some august fog. So far I this year I have saved some Alderman shelling pea seed, frog island nation and aquadulce favas and some speckles lettuce seed should be ready in less than a month. I am also hoping for some perennial sweet pea seed but I dont know yet if the seed will mature or not. Planting favas next week along with some other winter veg.

Packlithic - Your Father has received seeds from me twice now.  How have they done for you?  I did a seed clean out earlier this year because I knew what I had was NOT going to grow down here and needed a cooler spot.  Frank says you have a greenhouse and that is how you grow most vegetables in your rather cold climate.

I have grown some of the seeds you sent. The greenhouse fell victim to a bad winter snow storm and has yet to be fully repaired so that it is usable. I have been saving some of the seeds you sent until it is fixed as there is no way it is warm enough here for them to grow (also our growing season is too short for some of them without a greenhouse to extend it). last year I grew a pile of bean seeds you sent us and some of the lettuce (and related greens) seeds and they grew well. This summer we had a minimal veggie garden as I was too busy to plant anything high maintenance. I gave some of the really long season warm seeds that wont grow here to a friend of mine in oregon and she successfully grew them. I think that I will have a lifetime supply of corn salad (vit) seed thanks to your box of seeds. It makes a nice addition to salads. I planted lots of it and let a couple plants go to seed last year and this year and they produced a huge amount of seed. I dont think we will ever have to buy any corn salad seed as it produces seed well here.  Next year I am planning on planting all of the varieties of sunflowers that you sent in the new part of the garden that I just fenced last month. It will be the first time I have planted lots of sunflowers of different varieties and I am looking forward to the nice late summer display of color. Thank you for the seeds.

You're very welcome Packlithic!
I believe seed sharing is caring.  It's also saving varieties from going out of cultivation.
I recently discovered you just cannot grow French Tarragon here in the desert, it needs a cooler, much wetter climate.  That will probably be heading your direction.
I also have more red romaine lettuce seeds currently than I know what to do with.  Every time I place a seed order with Baker Creek they like sending me a packet of Red Romaine lettuce as a thank you!

I'm glad you like the Corn Salad!  It received a lack luster response to my desire to grow it and try it, so that's how you ended up with it.  When I'm told, "I won't eat that," it does put a damper on one's growing activities!  My Dear Husband doesn't like Squash either - but I blame that on his Mother's cooking.  He said he hates Squash because it was always served to him slimy and gooey!  Obviously someone had no concept of how to cook squash!  I grind up zucchini and yellow summer squash into potsticker filling and filling for eggrolls and he doesn't know it's in there.     Once mixed with turkey and other veggies he cannot see it.  I got him to eat candied squash when I make pan fulls of it at Thanksgiving or Christmas, so I know he likes that.  However it took convincing to get him to try it.  When he realized it wasn't slimy and gooey he ate all that was on his plate!  So figuring out what to grow around here can be an adventure in not only dealing with our desert climate but also dealing with the "Ewww I don't like that," factor.

When I go through my seed making packets for Christopher I have some shorter season tomatoes I might toss a few seeds of each your way.  One of them is a short season roma type bred in Minnesota to produce in under 60 days.  I got it to try here in the desert since getting the bulk of your tomato crop in before the desert heat sets in for the summer is a huge positive!

I have on order right now a "White habanero pepper."  I know Christopher is game for that one without even asking him!
Anyone else want some of this one?
