Lortone TS-8 Dismantle and Clean
« on: February 08, 2016, 12:24:44 PM »

Well, trying to clean at least.
This is the saw that Frank sent me home with a few months ago, and now that holidays, family weddings, new jobs and very wet cold weather are over for a moment I've gotten it out and taken apart. Motor and blade turn just fine, but when we first switched it on it spat white froth all over the place. Did a little unscrewing and got the top off. It seemed a little full of cooling medium (miscible oil, I believe?) while the Lortone manuals I found on line suggested only enough oil to cover the lower 1/4th of the blade. Also, the bottom contained several large rocks. (That's why it was so heavy!)

So, my question is this: is this lubricant any good, and if not, how on earth do I get it out without upturning the entire saw? Its box does not contain a drain plug that I can find. Also, is it standard procedure to bed a few stones in the oil to raise the level? And is the Lortone suggestion of 1/4th an inch correct, or is it also standard to keep more oil than that in the saw?

Much thanks! (And thanks again Frank! Motor appears to be in fine working order and we're being very very careful of that exposed belt.)

Putting rocks in to raise the oil level is a widely followed practice. You can use mineral oil from a farm supply store.Have fun.

It's a great little saw, for sure. I brought the oil level down just a bit and will filter it with the brown bag/bucket method, and I have some fresh mineral oil as well. Made a few cuts this afternoon and am very excited to play more tomorrow, while the weather holds!

Got a splash box to help contain the spray and have placed an order for the TS-8 vice through Jerry's Rock and Gem. Also picked up a new blade (Continuous rim diamond tile saw blades were on sale at Lowes. I know it won't last like the real thing, but for the price + my experimental state, I thought it would be a good starting place.) Have also connected with a fellow rock enthusiast at work (Starbucks collects oddities; should have known there'd be another one!) and after I get the saw cleaned up and the vice in, she'd like to experiment a little too on rocks she's been collecting from the beaches.

I also interviewed this morning with the group that owns the land in Oregon I keep talking about. Fingers crossed that I hear back (there's a lot more than just rock in my decision to pursue that opportunity!) but in an odd tradeoff it may mean leaving the saw behind. (In which case I'll be flat-rating rock around and probably seeing a lot more of Richardson's for cutting.)

Yeah it's an interesting place! Saw all the awesome metal sculptures they just got in too. I ran some material by someone there as well and got a 'yes this is good' and a 'no that's no good' on two rocks, respectively. I love getting feedback like that; the 'no good' is an interesting color and texture but too varied to take a good polish. It'll be a yard display rock or have small pieces tumbled for stream bed accents. It'll be a process to get the vice if it takes more than two weeks. Just found out I got the job in Oregon and the saw is coming with me. :)

Thank you!
In a way, yes. It's a 'puzzle job.' I'll be taking a lot of data and information and translating it into cohesive schedules, staffing reports and scholarship info, it looks like, plus a ton of other fairly indescribable smaller tasks as they come up. So each piece isn't particularly exciting, but the whole of it is and I can't argue with the location.
