Is this Chinese Writing Stone???
« on: May 13, 2016, 04:53:45 PM »

Can "Chinese Writing Stone" have a whitish background with dark dendrite sort of characters on it??

I've been trying to upload a photo but can't seem to get it down to a maximum size of 1000kb.  Even my pdf of my jpg is too large.  Help!!
Can you tell without a photo?

Hi Carol and welcome!

You can download any number of programs, but the one I prefer to reduce picture size is FastStone Photo Resizer (it's free).  You can get it here:  http://www.faststone.org/FSResizerDetail.htm

I usually resize to 600 x 800 and it works fine for the forum at that size.

To answer your question, I have never seen Chinese Writing Stone with a white background and dark dendrites, so it's probably something else.  See if you can download that program and post a pic.  If you have trouble, PM and I'll send you my email address and I'll do it for you.   :icon_sunny:

They can be basalt but the more even textured ones appropriate for lapidary are feldspar in diabase.

Thanks so much Hummingbirdstones for that program suggestion to reduce filesize.....FastStone Photo Resizer is a peach, it REALLY trimmed the filesize!!
So, here are two sides of this unknown stone.

It was sold to me as Chinese Writing Stone, but from all I've seen......I think it's not.
Still interesting....but not as originally presented by a seller at the GreenDragon in Pa.

Any idea what this is?? :dontknow:

Back in the age of the dinosaurs, when I did a lot of collecting in the Graveyard Point region, this material was called Chinese Writing Jasper if my memory's correct.  Do I have the name wrong?  Is it a named jasper?

Looks a bit like that dendritic limestone from Germany. Softer than jasper, but can be pricey.

We always called that "Chinese Dendritic jasper" (also back in the dino age )

I was hoping you'd respond.  Thanks.  Dendritic, dendritic, dendritic!  Memories fade over the eons.

That's very hard to say from just a photograph.  If it's limestone it could be large-grained and would only take a "satin" polish.  I don't think it's technically a jasper, judging from the images.  But I think your pieces will make great specimens.

It doesn't look 'large grained' at all.
It already has what I'd call 'a satin finish' as it wasn't sold as a rough slab,   The sides are straight and smooth, and it could be just sitting on a display stand as it is.
For Jewelry purposes it may not be what I was hoping, but my husband has a bit of a collection of 'pretty and interesting lapidary' [among other things]so maybe we should add this to that collection and leave it as it is.
