Crazy people collecting
« on: September 25, 2014, 09:03:01 PM »

I was a bit fearful that Helene would think we were nuts considering the distances we planned to travel on this collecting trip. As we were to meet Panamark at 8 am  a few hundred miles from our lodging in Yellowstone we left in the middle of the night . A cautious drive through the mists and fogs of the park with bison and elk carefully avoided yielded to warp speed in Idaho. After we met Panamark we followed him for two and a half hours to a spot where he swore us to secrecy. I am beginning to cut the rough from this trip in a few days and will post pictures then.
We did a bit of hiking and collecting on hillsides that has a very unusual mix of ancient laminated lake sediments ( the flat plates in the pics) , Uruguay banding agates and jaspers derived from vitrified volcanic ash as well as very striking marble.
Helene went a little nuts collecting until her bag weighed about as much as she did.
The last pic is of the group checking out a few road cuts right before we again followed Panamark for 2.5 hours back to his place and good western hospitality. Excellent trip  and a very long day for those along who believe in sleep.

Sweet trip! I love that kind of country, and the bonus of meeting a fellow member/rockhound makes the sleeplessness worth it!

Can't wait to see the material from the secret spot. Secret spot material is almost always better than known location stuff... Grass is always greener in some one elses collecting! :)

Looks a lot like home Frank...
nothing better than good scenery, good company, secret hounding area, and someplace to take a nap LOL. Looking forward to the rest of the pics to come.

If that's crazy people, they must be related to me. I love it...... Just remember, this had nothing to do with rocks or agates on this trip.  The hounding was only a conduit for which good people ( friends ) came together and got to spend good quality time together. Most folks only read about trips like this, see pictures, hear stories, but they're out there doing it. Life doesn't get too much better. I'll bet the drive conversation was a blast. Thanks for sharing. Love to see more of this kinda thing. This group ROCKS !

I have seen what condition your legs are in so I have to say "you gotta be the toughest, most dedicated, nut on the tree".  :notworthy:

Great report that will be even better when we get to see the rock that is worth that kind of effort. But then again, most any rock is worth a good trip.

I had the best time.  Rocks are tricky.  At first they are easy to tote around, then every minute they get heavier and heavier.
I might have scared Frank and Karen away with my excessive talking and crass humor.   Hours of driving go by fast when you have good conversation.

Drove through three states in one morning.  First time experiencing the Northeast.  Beautiful country.

I rate my vacation a 10, or an A plus. "That's Right" - get up and boogie. (inside joke for Karen who did not experience the disco decade)
