What would you do with it?
« on: February 28, 2017, 01:01:46 PM »

I have a cool piece of red Tiger's Eye.  I'm thinking I need to cut a ~1/2" slab and make a 1" x 1-1/4" heart cab. Rounded and shaped on both sides.

The only thing is....???  What would I do with it after I made it?

1.  Put it in a drawer and look at it once in a while?
2. Give it to my wife so she can put it in a drawer and look at it once in a while.
3. Drill small holes in it and install small wire loops for a neckless?
4. Wire wrap it?

I just haven't quite found the inspiration for it yet.......

Or have someone make the prong setting for you if you don't know how.   :laughing4:

You could wire wrap it.

I'm a big fan of wire wrappings. I'm sure inspiration will come to you one random night.

Since you're talking about it being domed and polished on both sides you might try an alternative to prongs. If you can find someone to make a solid setting with longer flat sections replacing the prongs. Find an outline that you would enjoy seeing wrapped up onto the face of the stone to secure it.

I'm thinking of how an object on a wall with vines growing around it might look - with a few leaves and whatever coming up over the edge of the object. Probably starting to talk about serious money for the silversmith now... .

You could drill holes in the edges for mounting with peg jump rings.

:headbang: Now that's the kind of thing I'm thinking about.  I'll have to give this type mount further thought!

Beautiful piece by the way!  Very nice work. :notworthy:

Since you are planning on doming both sides I think it would lend it self best to wire wrapping.  If it were domed front and flat polished back I would bezel mount with an open back.  it a personal thing but due to the nature of tiger eye I would not want the prongs because I feel the prolonged prong contact with the stone would mar the surface.  Tiger eye is still crystalline in nature and not as resilient as an agate.
