Oregon Eclipse
« on: April 27, 2017, 06:56:05 PM »

Found out today that we are surrounded by eclipse parties. Not throwing one here because I'll be herding 50 high school kids onto a bus that morning (we will be providing eclipse glasses and letting them view it, then sending 'em home from their volunteer projects) but really hoping the incoming tourists are smart about roads, water, gas and wildfire danger.
One local viewing event was mislisted as happening in Antelope. It's actually on the other side off on a private ranch a few miles south-east of us. We are now anticipating a lot of confused visitors to a town of about 10 people, no gas, no water and no public bathrooms. There's also a party at the Painted Hills. We finally got our back roads taken off the map but every summer a dozen or so folks wander through trying to find their way there. The old road hasn't been maintained in 15 years. It's one-lane, rutted, slimy when wet, impassable by anything that isn't 4-wheel drive and people insist on attempting it in Kias and with campers.

I hope this thing is over-hyped. I really do. I'd love to have a nice quiet uneventful end of summer. I'm on the wildland firefighting team (I vaguely know which end of the hose water comes out of) and will get sent out if something goes wrong, for better or for worse, just for want of people to squirt the flames. We are anticipating the worst fire season in years because of all the rain this spring, and Oregon is anticipating something like a million extra visitors, with thousands in dispersed campsites on public land for the whole weekend.

If you're coming to eastern Oregon to view the eclipse, that is awesome (just please don't park in the tall grass!)

We saw  a full eclipse years ago in the Columbia gorge. If you can get up high you will get great views of the approaching shadow bands which are outrageous. Listen to the eclipse as well as nature becomes silent.

Total cloud cover here so even the partial eclipse we would get here won't be seen.

Lol. Maybe it will it will clear up for them. At least they can party all night. And then someone will have to go out and rescue a few dummies.
I was hunting one time and had to
Get up and relieve myself in the middle of the night and caught a liner eclipse. Almost full, I didn't even know it was going on happen. We were camping at almost 9,000 ' it was crystal clear.

I believe it will happen Monday August 21 and will peak for 2 minutes at 10:22 AM.  (in Oregon)

I've been planning this eclipse for over 10 years.  A total eclipse is on my bucket list and this is the last good one on the North American continent in my lifetime.  This time last year the wife and I were planning a trip to Yellowstone around the date and would catch the eclipse in Jackson, WY.  Then I came to me senses and realized what a madhouse things were going to be.  Now I am taking the week off and I am going to camp/rockhound my way North to Boise where a friend lives, catch the eclipse with him in Idaho, and camp/rockhound my way home.  My friend has local knowledge of the area and says he has already scouted good places for us to view the eclipse.

Had to have been the eclipse of Feb 26, 1979.  The friend I am meeting in Boise grew up in Montana and also witnessed the '79 event.

We live in Dallas,Oregon, the hot zone for this eclipse.......All the hotels are sold out for it,the farmers even have their pastures and land rented out for this event... (Rolling eyes)...The town is out to rake the tourists for all the money they can take (parades,booths,etc,etc... LOL)
I remember the last on,I was living in North Dakota and was on top of a 20 foot oil tank...It was something to experience, that's for sure...
