Burning midnight oil...
« on: October 19, 2014, 11:28:06 PM »

I'm planning out my Metal clay entry for the next FMG contest category.
Sometimes you just have to stay up late to get it all out on paper or for that matter get it drawn out before it changes itself in your brain as designs often do in my case.

Going to be using stones by Christopher, Accented1 (Jason), and Sheila (Rocfeathers) from the other forum.

I'm going to try my hand at chip inlay on this baby, building the channels from metal clay.  The inlay will be quartz chips, amethyst chips, and faux opal chips.

On paper it looks awesome, I can't wait to see it in the flesh.   Will you take interim shots, so we can see it as it grows??

If I remember to take shots as I do things I'll post them.   :icon_sunny:
Sadly I get going and buried in a project and I tend to forget about before and during pictures!

I envy your ability to draw out your designs.  I can't draw worth spit.

Looks like it's gonna be a good one, Amanda.  Have at it!   :icon_sunny:

Honestly I have really only drawn out three designs to date.  This one, my last metals entry and my polymer clay entry.  Otherwise I never draw the designs out, they just morph from my brain into whatever they become in my hands...

I do happen to come from an artistic family.  Dad is a graphic designer by education and can make exquisite pen and ink drawings, in his history he did painting on canvas, ceramic sculpture and painting of the pieces.  My sister can do drawings in colored pencil and pastels that look lifelike or mimic exactly Disney characters, and she does it all free hand!  Mom quilts and crochets.  Me?  I'm a Jewelry artist, weaver, and sculpture person.  We all ended up with our specialties.  I have an Aunt who is a rock hound but her kind of hounding is if it looks interesting she picks it up!  According to my Father her apartment is lined with rocks all over the place.

And as my overly creative brain would have it, this design has lost appeal with me.
I'm moving on, have something else grabbing my interest for this contest that deals with blue stones and silver and some sculpture.
Not taking the time to draw out the newest design.  It's in my head and it's morphing around a stone I grabbed at the Flagg Gem and Mineral show this past weekend.

I wonder about PMC as an alternative to wire wrapping.

I couldn't draw anything and have it come out right either unless we are talking about stick people made with tooth pics but I could never put together something like that in my head either. Too intricate for me.

Love your work and look forward to seeing the finished project.

If it was meant to be, it will come back later. It could be years, and suddenly you got the urge as well as just the right piece of stone to make you go forward. Design looks fabulous, big, but fabulous.  :icon_thumleft: :icon_thumright:

Thanks everyone.
Kurt, it is big, but I think I need something different than my standard breast plate sized pieces for this contest this time.
I'm going for an Urban renewal/Sci-fi theme with blue stones and some cubic zirconia instead.  Going to have some fun with carving dried clay and appliqueing a clay pattern to a base....
They like attention to detail in these contests.  They're about to get it!   :icon_sunny:

Thanks Sara.  One never knows.  A design will fall out of favor with me only to be reborn in a different manner later on.

Well Sara...
The new piece I am doing in place of this one is in blue - My Aunt's favorite color.  I had already started thinking of this design when I found out about my Aunt's health conditions.  So when I get this piece finished I'm dedicating it to my Aunt and to the walk down Monroe Avenue in Rochester NY that we will never get to do together.  Monroe Avenue is the road in Rochester that at least until more recently was lined with all manner of shops, some a bit risque and pornographic.  My Aunt and I at one time had decided that when she was better we'd take a walk down Monroe Avenue together and paint the town.  We both have a wild side and now and then you just have to let it out...

The new design features  Silver clay Lentil beads - large ones with a brick pattern that mimics the crackled effect in the agate pendant that hangs down, and then above that brick pattern an area of enamel to represent the river that runs through Rochester, and above it images of buildings sculpted in metal clay.  I'm going to mount Cubic Zirconia in various places to represent the Moon, stars, and the lights of the city.

Now I just have to finish it in time to have it submitted by January 31st!
