WJS time to submit
« on: October 20, 2014, 02:48:51 AM »

Its been a long journey to get here, but now its time to submit the piece for the World Jade Symposium.

While I got no chance of winning any of the categories, I did win basically a race against myself. I think I made huge strides forward, in my quest on improving myself, and that, in the end, IS what matters most.

Here are the pictures that I'm going to submit in the next few days (got only tomorrow to try new ones on the stand (too much of the pin holding the piece in place can be seen and has been shortened since)), before sending the piece off to Canada.

We are supposed to enter 6 pictures of the final Entry:
My out-door pics
Front

Back

Walk-around

On stand for presentation at the symposium

and finally: worn

I know some of the pics are not very professional, but.........
just like the whole thing, carving, stand and all; its rough, but its me!

Thanks for looking, any last minute recommendations for adjustments are highly welcome, Kurt

For anyone interested in following the event, the people and entries that are coming up in the next few weeks:

I don't have any last minute suggestions Kurt!
However I will say I admire your determination in doing this!
You entered this for the same reason I enter the FMG contests - to learn something and improve my work.
Goodluck, and I hope you DO place, because you deserve it!   :icon_sunny:

I think you did an excellent job Kurt :headbang: I hope you're proud of the piece no matter where you place because it's a good effort. I know you've put a lot of thought into it and it's there for a reason but the white base doesn't fit my eye, it would help if it was a bigger irregular shape and not triangular but the solid white is distracting to me even when I try to look at the piece as a whole; JMHO

Thank you,

Yeah, a darker base would have given it a nobler appearance, and the wood alone would give a good contrast to allow the jade to stand out. I agree.

The original symbolic idea behind choosing the white marble is/was "purity" at the beginning and end of life.
And the wood stands for "Twisted road" along the path of our life.  So basically two things to compliment the intended meaning of the jade-design.

Its the first time that I'm forced to compliment the stone with a presentation. Lots to learn. And the best learning-tool for me???? Make mistakes..... :icon_rr:

It's never a mistake if you learn from it; I don't think the base is a mistake and I thought I had an idea what it represented but didn't want to guess and be totally off base LOL; yea I'm chicken...
If you lived closer...... I'd volunteer one of my nephrite cobbles I picked up on the wknd to the cause. Just for size, the one on the far right bottom is 50# I think I'd pick the one in the top right; most of these originally came out of seams and are naturally flattened

I agree, I think this may be your best piece to date.  I think it's amazing how far you have come in a relatively short time.  The Raven is beautiful and the polish you got on that piece is stunning.  I have to agree about the white base, but overall I believe it's complete and it tells a story.  You ought to be especially proud of this accomplishment!

thanks to Allen who lugged the material for me all the way from its source to hong kong. it has fantastic reddish colours that should compliment the fire agate perfectly, if i can get the pics right.

the contest i want to enter is here; http://www.jewelrymakingdaily.com/blogs/gemmys/archive/2014/03/21/lapidary-journal-jewelry-artist-magazine-2014-gemmy-awards-contest.aspx

i think one or two of our members here or at the old forum are already in.

Thanks.  You know I wish I had known about that contest months ago!  I could have entered.  Seven days from now till the deadline isn't enough for me to put together a piece that is respectable for judging.  The Gemmy's however is one contest on my list.  I'm going to Aim for Bead Dreams in 2015 and still do the FMG contests.  And pending if I have the time enter the Saul Bell for the Metal Clay category.

Thanks.  You know I wish I had known about that contest months ago!  I could have entered.  Seven days from now till the deadline isn't enough for me to put together a piece that is respectable for judging.  The Gemmy's however is one contest on my list.

i just saw that event popping up last month, with one of the editors posting on fb. as i got that Negrita in the works anyhow, I thought why not? Lets shoot for it.

Thanks for dropping in to vote. Did not mention it yet, because was told until yesterday that things still needed to be smoothed out. But looks up and running now,  I'm quite torn with my choice for sculpture to vote for. There is an incredible amount of skill presented and I'm ready to betray my own hands by voting for something that is so far from my own reality that it seems crazy that I would not adjust my own attempts to emulate them.

I think I'm down to Georg Schmerholz "Shell" Knowing how difficult it is to fit something into something else and the depth he achieved is incredible too. On the other hand, while the whole composition is a compilation of years of practice in different medias, the end-result looks just so serene and elegant.

And

Lyle Sopel "Bears"  Another accomplished artist of the superlative. Its a huge compilation of pieces that appeals to me any which way you describe it.

For those of you interested to have your vote cast

And if you got a bit of time, don't miss out to visit the Artist page , where there is a lot of info on artists as well as their pieces , not to forget tons of pictures of entries finished and in creation, plus past creations. . Reading all will take a while, to say the least. WARNING Drool-Alert! Cover your keyboards. :) :)
