I know about all that incredible talent!  Holy crap!  I spent a good 40 minutes examining the photos of all the sculptures before I made my decision and voted.  It was hard for me to vote.  In the sculpture category I went for intricate detail, difficulty and execution of the plan in my vote.  Some pieces looked entirely to simplistic.  While I'm sure these folks put a lot of time into their pieces, I wanted a piece to tell a story and show creativity.  In the end the Sculpture of the guy with the video camera got my vote.

I went the same route in my jewelry voting.  Pieces with attention to detail that showed a lot of skill and patience being applied went to the top of the pack and then I had to narrow it down.  In the end, Kurt your piece got my vote.  Not because it was your piece - but because out of all the pieces it was the most detailed and told a story where the other more abstract pieces had no "story" to them.  They were just carved abstract pieces, some felt lifeless to me.  I cannot vote for something that leaves me with no feelings for it.

What you said Amanda is exactly why Kurt's piece got my vote too!  Hands down it was the best piece with the most detail & character to it!!  Great job Kurt!  Same with the sculptures, some dang awesome pieces there!!

Thank you so much for your vote of confidence.

While I'm trying to convince most of the carvers not to vote for established names or myself in the carvers choice contest, I do hope for a good placing in the public vote.

Carvers choice carries a two week trip to china and to be trained by some established master carvers for that duration. I'm trying to get a consensus between us, that we should be voting for the artist that can benefit from that prize the most, instead just creating publicity for an established carver. Luckily, the organizers and nearly a third of the entrants have already publicly agreed. Heck, I could use the training, but I'm sure that I will remain a hobbyist, and strongly belief that any votes coming my way for that prize, would serve much better for someone who struggles to turn this into making a living.

its been an incredibly pleasant experience thus far and was able to talk to people that i always admired. Most of them turned out extremely friendly folks and very down to earth, and made  new friends that are up and coming in a strong and fearless way.

Again thank you for the votes. As we cant see who is in the lead until publicly declared its still a long wait, but I'm reasonably confident in looking forward to reach my goal of top 5 in my category.

"two week trip to china"....not much of a prize if you win except for the training since you already live there but it's the thought that counts, here's hoping you win :hello2:

Public vote, yes looking forward to a good placing, trip to china, not so much. :icon_sunny:

The trip itself is not bad, even for someone over here. The area is known for good food, interesting architecture and lots of history, but...... Its the training above it all. There are a lot of artists out there whom this prize will/might help a lot more than me, to achieve their potential.    :occasion14:

Thank you all for your votes of confidence.

Have just been informed that your votes propelled me to second place in the public vote.

Full set of results will come out later today. With exception of the winner in sculpture (public vote) for the sail-fish and two others, I dont know yet who the winners are.

Got the permission from the organizer to take pics from the site, so will list them later in the day once confirmed.

Way to go Kurt!  Awesome!   :headbang:  :toothy10: :occasion14: :notworthy: :icon_sunny: :icon_sunny: :blob1: :wav:

You have to love that feeling when you get notified that you placed.  It's awesome.
The first time I was informed I had placed in an FMG contest I literally screamed and then cried because I always thought my work wasn't good enough.
Now you know your work is contest material, you have the votes to prove it!   :icon_sunny:
Rock on Kurt and keep the carvings coming - next year first place for you!  :headbang:

Nahh, its not that bad.  It just means that I have been more visible on the Net than others.  :icon_sunny:
Placing would have more value if it came through the judges on site (I'm still unaware of those results). :)

Next time? thats questionable! We all helped the event on most continents, yet where completely neglected during the event itself. I mean, if we where not worth a single picture or word in 3 days; I for one have no real interest to spend time promoting. Shoestring budget or not, first time attempt or not, one does not neglect a large contingent of participants who made it all possible in the first place. :nono:

Nevertheless; I learned a lot along the way, so while I plan to put a boot or two into the organizers back-side, I can say that the time spend on the jade was very much worthwhile. :occasion14:

Not bad, had hoped for top 5 and that's what came to pass.
Justin Smith seems to have been forgotten by the judges as well as all the knives.
All those, seem to me of very good quality.

Here is the full set of results: http://www.jadesymposium.org/

So much detail in the carvings. But as we all know the small details mean the most:)

Thank you all for the wonderful support over the years.
I'm well aware that I would not be doing what I do without all the superb support provided so generously received from you all.

Now, on to this years challenge: Opal this time round! :DRUNKS:
