Not entirely sure where to post this.
Round 2 of table mosaic! Still WIP, but cut a few more pieces last night and now I'm more than half way done.



All local material. The goal is three of these little 'quilt squares' in a row, with some surrounding material, to make a long, narrow stone mosaic table top. We'll see how far I get but for now it's been a good evening-when-it's-not-too-hot project. Only had one catastrophic stone fracture so far! Stone is all from around where I live, and much of it is too pitted to take a good polish or be appropriate for jewelry-making. This is photographed dry, indoors under artificial light, on a cell phone, so don't believe the colors too much. End product will be a mosaic, so pieces will be an 8th of an inch or so apart. Small corner fractures and imperfections lend themselves to that art form.

It's going to be beautiful. In my younger days, I loved looking through and developing tessellation patterns.

Yeah I expect it to be pretty heavy. I haven't designed the rest of it yet. I may build it to a standard size and look for a premade sturdy base, or just finish it up and balance it outside on basalt blocks. My mom found an excellent iron round table base for her more traditional mosaic table top at Pier 1- she just swapped their thick glass round for her big mosaic and it worked perfectly. Mine's a different shape, so we'll see what happens! She mosaics from ceramic tile.

i go to yard sales and when i see beat up old tables thrown out with beautiful legs i take them home tear them apart to save the base/legs and with the rest i have fire wood.  i've seen octagon style tables out there so you should have no problems finding something.  sometimes i find dressers and incorporate other table tops onto/into it them.  they turn out to be real beauties.  have fun finishing it...
