Keep them sparse. Sparse flies always work better it seems. If you are going to fish only with your own flies make a variety of copies of local classics from big to little and dark to light. Salmon can be a real pain as you can cast over them a hundred times and some one else will move into the spot and get fish immediately. In most east coast salmon spots that are crowded you are expected to take a step down stream after each cast which is a good idea anyway as you are always casting to fresh water. Learn about " mending " the line to get the fly to deeper water and do not go nuts with movement with the fly as excess movement just takes the fly out of the fishes visual range ( a cone ) before it can get angry enough to strike. Have fun.

if you can find antlers around your area, the tips make perfect fishing lures after a dremmel pays them attention.

One year i got fed up with buying commercial lures that didnt work, i caved a fish from antler, used a mouse trap bail to go through it and made loops.
Put a swivel on the front and a hook on the back.
Second or third cast into the river and i had a 25lb chinook salmon on.

I have antler tips a generous member of the old forum sent while I was in Texas.
Please tell, show me the dremmel steps to do that, friend....email them?

i just used the wood cutting bits and shaped a fish then sanded it a little smoother than rough, doesnt have to be perfect, perfect lures only catch fisherman at cash registers.

I was fishing at a small lake on a reservation and couldn't catch squat. There were blue damsel flies everywhere so it was pretty obvious that the fish were full of them.

I went home and dug out an old small fly tying kit that my dad had used before he died but I had never tried it. I make a few really ugly copies of damsel flies (but I had the color right) and headed back to the lake. Ugly did not matter because they were striking the color. I had my limit in short order even though the flies were shredded from the fish hitting it.

Color is the most important thing according to this lesson. I practiced up a bit and made a few more flies but never really got into it.

If you are using antler or wood it looks to me like you are making minnows (lures) and not flies that would be used with a spin cast rig.

I'll ztick with those in winter.
The antler deal was phishin's idea.
I'll try those for bass in the summer.

You have a photo of your flies, Jim?
