"Black Rock" ring I made yesterday.
« on: December 01, 2014, 08:16:30 AM »

I learned from a FB discussion that I'd better not call it something until I get it lab certified; but what lab will anyone trust; none by the time the discussion was finally over. Oh well, I like the rock anyway and if it stands up to the abuse of my resin diamond polishing pads I guess it's a half decent rock LOL

And if you let the folks of FB determine your rock over any lab that's even worse.  I'd trust a lab far faster than the opinions of anyone on FB.

Gorgeous ring, and honestly I am going to assume it's black Jade since you work with so much of it.  Great work on a tough to polish material.   :icon_sunny:

Doesn't Frank know a good lab?  He has someplace he sends his rocks to get tested.  Pfffftt- it seems really easy for people to stand up on pedestals from the front of their computer screen.  I'm JUST SAYIN'.

What a beautiful Black Jade Ring!!!  OH THAT'S RIGHT, I SAID IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!  *gasp*

That must have been hard to make, I would have busted it in two for sure.

We have been following the same discussion I assume on " Friends of Jade " on facebook. Some very smart people there with lots of experience , some as superb jade cutters and one as an analytical scientist. The discussion has led to folks questioning long held assumptions which in the end may help bring new types of rough to the table if they are not already there and correctly labeled. Excellent use of ferro- hornblende  or black jade or maybe chloromelanite jadeite or .....   .

As Frank says above, the labs will quote materials it's composed of and the specifics of composition and that's it, they won't commit because there is a lot of "discussion" about what can or should be called nephrite. The individuals discussing the rocks as Frank says, have a very broad and in depth knowledge of the material and no-one has called me on mine because there is a lot of nephrite in BC; I was being a little tongue in cheek when I posted this morning LOL ( edited to add that 3 of them have asked me to send them some)
Mrs. T.
You wouldn't break it; the first one I made had a white line formation fracture that this stone has occasionally and it showed up when I cut the outer hole for the ring but I finished it anyway because there was 1.5mm stone in the shank to hold it and it took the abuse needed to cut and polish it on the pads so a thicker one without the formation lines is a breeze. picture below; I can actually spring it open enough to put some resin in but I think I'll leave it as is to remind me to check for the lines; they.re hard to see sometimes.

The BC govmnt. won't acknowledge any black nephrite in BC so if you can't trust them, who can you??? LOL

Put a green rock on top and glue them both together to make something altogether different. Pretty nice work :icon_thumleft:

Beautiful work and stone.

The hardest thing for me to do when I am making jade rings is finding the fractures. Sometimes they are impossible to see. The easiest way for me to find them is to put the ring on my little finger and whack it on a piece of wood ten times

Thanks Bent; I thought about it this morning and decided I'd just break it the rest of the way because I'd allways know it was there but I have been considering putting a cap on the new one made of the sillimanite or maybe a coffin cut gemstone of some type. I might do a cab of the Guatemalan ice jade that I have if it looks right.
iceopals; I guess the above answers your question, sorry, they only take about 1 1/2 hrs to make so I'm not too worried if something isn't right.
Thanks Jim; I usually throw my slabs of this on the cement till they give off a pleasing tone but this one fooled me. At least I was forced to make another one so I got to try a different design out :) I've only taken this one to 1500 on the resin pads so far and it glistens already.

No probs Ernie; it's pretty crude compared to what I've seen other people use, all I've got is an angle grinder flipped on it's back and some disks LOL but it serves the purpose for my needs; getting better with every attempt I think; it's good to be getting old and delusional, and getting bad eyesight LOL

Wow that IS strong material if you can expand it with that crack and STILL not break it!!!!!

I'm still not so sure I would be that skilled (and I am talking just with handling the crack alone, definitely not with making that whole thing)...  LOLOLOL  It only took you an hour and a half to make that?  Holy shlamoly.
