Beach Agate sphere
« on: May 09, 2019, 06:04:06 PM »

This apparently is called a "Charlie agate" from an old timer rockhound friend after I told him I found the rough on Jalama Beach, CA.  It must be a colloquial thing because I have found no reference to corroborate...has anyone else out there heard of this?  In any case, as found it amounted to an interesting "ugly duckling" that I reluctantly stuffed into my backpack and hauled it and dozens of other rocks to the parking area over miles of sand.  It sat in my "I'll get to it some day pile for about a year now.  Then I got curious and started the sphere process; it took longer than normal, still have a few scratches I need to attend to.  I like the near-end result though- to my eye the swirling dark clouds and color speak of Halloween.  You just never know what will come out of the rough until you play with it lapidary wise.  3.9-inch finished diameter.

Cheers.

Speaking as a young woman who asks questions at rock shows... I have been told a few very tall tales by old-timers who don't want to admit they've never seen something before!

That said, whatever it's called, that is a gorgeous sphere. Amazing what comes from the random beach rock, or roadcut or debris pile. Good find, and lovely polish.
