tried an intarsia cab
« on: June 03, 2020, 09:48:08 AM »

First serious attempt at an Intarsia cab.  I used Opalized wood, Turquoise and Dino bone.  I picked the Turq and wood to try and match the vein pattern for interest.  The Basenite divider I wanted to make wider on one side to force the pie shape concept.  I tried to make it large enough to not look like a mistake but small enough not to detract from the main stones.  Had be be a little careful on the mid stage wheels not to undercut between stone cutting speeds.

It's for my sis for her birthday

Really nice work. I like that a lot better than a lot of intarsia I have seen.

Yeah 330 and since I did it late in the day I put a 100 watt bulb in a shop light over it for the night and ground the following day.  I thought it was a doomed project.  I cut the first wood and lapped the side and then dropped it while checking things and was originally going to use a turq blue chrysocolla piece and dropped that one too.  All in all it turned out better than it would have with the previous choices.  Fumble fingers makes for tumble mix.

I think it turned out great!  Very interesting but also homogeneous with your stone choices.  Are you going to set it for your sis?  She's gonna love it!

I am sure she will want it set and of course guilt me into making the accent pieces to go with it.   Oh to be an only child, lol   It would make a very nice center stone on a bracelet.  Not sure but if that was the case I would probably make either 2 or 4 outer stones and maybe make them rounds with each being split down the middle and made of 2 stones.  Or do the 2 inner stones 50/50 wood and turq and the outer 2 stones be solid Dinos and that would break it up and make it a little unexpected too.
