I just purchased a HP E-10 combo unit. I have noticed in shares the same base and what appears everything else with the HP A-50 cabbing machine except it has a saw ion the left side instead of wheels and pan. The left arbor shaft may be different. I removed the saw and have a 1" shaft with 7 1/4" from the inner collar to the shoulder of the threaded end where the saw blade mounted. I tried to download pics but I am new to this and I think I screwed it up. What I am looking for is anyone who knows what the left side shaft looks like on an A-50 and if this conversion will work.

It should be possible to do what you are planning.  You will need to plan your spacers.

Thanks  I am a newb and have never put a wheel on a shaft. Is it just the wheels and spacers or are there flange washers or set screws?

That should work with just a nut and washer on the end provided the shaft is one inch diameter.  If it is smaller you may not have enough stiffness to do this.

So just the compression of the nut holds them? It is a 1" shaft and this is a very good condition machine that has been in storage most of its time. shaft is clean and runs true.

If I'm visualizing your situation correctdly, you may need a collar on the inside (flange with  set screw), if you don't have a typical shoulder on the shaft inboard.  What you don't want is to use a threaded nut to push your wheel and or its spacer against the bearing body (friction when spinning).  You can buy collars that can be slid on the shaft and tightened with set screws so that you have something to push against with your outside nut.  I"m trying to describe what I had to do to mount a diamond wheel on the right side of a HP arbor that had not threads on the shaft (thus I needed a set screw flange collar on both sides of the wheel).  I bought the collars at Grangers but others outfitters will be able to provide.  I hope this helps.

Thanks  There is a set screw collar against the bearing already. I will need a 3/4" spacer 1st to clear the bearing support and allow clearance for a custom pan and splash shield. Next will be a 2"x 8" Rez wheel, then more spacers to a 3"x8" expanding drum, then a heavy washer and nut. The threaded part of the shaft is short so I will have to play with the spacers to get it right but I think it will work. I really think this is the same shaft and everything as a Highland Park A-50 cabbing machine. The E-10 has the same base etc as the A-50 but with a saw on the left. Thanks for your help.
