Octopus in Octagon Double 8
« on: May 25, 2015, 06:20:42 PM »

This months challenge was creating a geometric design with straight lines, but no one defined what we could do within those outlines.

Stichite in Serpentine from Tasmania, send by a friend in Tasmania to try out

Very soft material to work with (I suppose Soapstone like), but solid and very compact to about a mm thickness.

Originally, I planed to use Sodalite for this project, but the intriguing mixture of colours here won out, and fortunately went ahead with this one.

As always, still room to improve, but no more time before the death-line, so this will have to do.

Thanks for looking, Kurt

The time limit is an interesting approach, focus on the essentials. The outline is surprisingly effective and the content strong. This should give you a bit to think about.

Looks sort of like the symbol for Hydra in the Marvel Comics movies.  I can dig this.   :headbang:
Very nice choice of material too.   :icon_sunny:

Thank you for the kind words.

Yes time constraint quite often gets the better out of me.  :LOLOL:
In the Hospitality industry, the past has shown, that when all hell breaks loose around me, I seem to become more focused, and drive in that kind of environment.

Never heard of Hydra that way before yesterday, as someone mentioned it on FB.  :occasion14:

I'll never go by another manhole cover without thinking about what may be lurking in the sewers Kurt LOL!!!
Really nice concept and execution. So many rocks, so little time, now if you could only get your favorite model victim to do the finish polishing for you, imagine how much more you could carve LOL

rocks and people have a lot in common; one persons "leaverite" is anothers treasure

I really like the direction your carvings have taken lately Kurt (subject matter really because I like dragons and creepy crawly type stuff); this is a really beautiful piece.  It is hard to picture it in Sodalite; this material suits the subject well in my opinion.

Thank you, If you like crawlies, you might like the Fire Agate snake finally coming to the finish-line in about a month.  :LOLOL:
