Outrageous Cab Contest March/April 2019
« on: March 04, 2019, 07:53:36 PM »

Rules:
1) Cab must be made by you.
2) Cab must be made within the time period of this contest.  Contest begins on the first of the month and ends on 11:59 p.m. on the last day of the month.  NO pulling old cabs from your storage baskets!
3) As long as the basic shape is considered a cab it's golden.  You can enter intarsias and carved top cabs such as cameos etc.  After all, this is the OUTRAGEOUS cab contest!  We love free form cabs!  Pull out the stops and give us the best you have!
4) One entry per person please!
5) Please show photos of your slabs and preforms if you can so we can see your thought process and how you did things.
6) No finished jewelry pieces.  Just the cab.
7) Cab sets are OK.
8) This is only for bragging rights and your cabochon photo posted up top in the forums unless someone posts a lapidary related prize and wants to ship it to the winner of the contest.

Let the games begin!!!   :toothy10:

I haven't been in the contest for a while so I'll kick it off this month.

CONDOR AGATE
The slab has been on my shelf for a while, but I finally cut the cab this last weekend.  This was the last slab I took off this stone and I cut it thick, over 10mm, because I knew I wanted to make a pocket stone from this one (the previous 3 slabs were all just as beautiful, but only 6mm thick).  Due to the thickness this cab has a high domed front.  I polished the back also and I think I like the back better.

There is a picture of the slab as it came off the saw.  No preform pic since all I did was trim off some of the matrix before starting to grind.  I let the natural shape of the agate dictate the final shape.  There is a picture of the finished front and back.  This stone deserves a decent picture so I will eventually dig out my light box and try to get a very nice dust-free photo of it.

That is outstanding.  I think nothing compares to condor.

My sister was down this week and helped her with some silver projects and cut her some new stones (palm fiber and a Pink Crazy Lace.  I had enough time to make myself one cab and I had picked up this rind at Quartzsite for 80 cents.  Love looking thru the bargain slabs to find the sleepers.  I like showing what you can get from the bargain slabs.  Not sure where the Sagenite was from.  Busy schedule this month so this was my only time to make one for the forum.  Cab was cut unmarked side up due to the tapered nature of the rind so the surface with the shape drawn is the bottom of the cab.  Adding one last pic closer since the sprays don't show up in the larger shot.  Surprising detail.

These are two very outstanding stones.  I have some Condor which I have in a box.  Inspires me to figure out the best cut.  Really outstanding trimming in both cases!!!
